July Ratings

Las Vegas is a huge AC/Hot AC market with KSNE and KMXB #1 and #2. This was one of KSNEs best non-holiday months ever.

KOMP is on fire..moving 3.7-4.4-5.3-6.0. This has to be their best PPM month. But I am wondering if this is their best ratings since the 1990s or even 1980s. Maybe ratings historian Chris Huff knows?

I believe this is the first PPM month where KISF beat KWID for #1 Spanish.

KLUC back as #1 CHR as KFRH moves back to their normal range after a spectacular June.

KXTE has opened up a lead against KVGS in the alternative race. Should KVGS flip to a format to take some share away from Lotus's KOMP-KXPT (without hurting KKLZ in the process).

KXNT AM-FM continues to disappoint, now down to a 2 share. KDWN isn't too far behind.

KQLL has dipped below a 1 share. Maybe they need to add at least some personality.

Classic Country KBET AM is one of the biggest surprises..a record high 1.6. My impression is they put no thought or effort into this station at all. Is it on a loop? Yet it's ahead of huge signal KDWN and only 0.1 behind 107.9 FM!

If anyone has any demos it would be superior to my 6+ analysis.

I wonder if at some point CBS will admit defeat and go back to music on the FM. It would be interesting to see daypart numbers for KXNT. Their first mistake was probably moving Stock out of AM drive. I don't know if there's much hope for KDWN... the numbers lately haven't been any better than the "old" KDWN, which at least was more entertaining because it was so bad. They could probably do a little better running Stock 9am-noon; but their overall numbers would probably have to at least double if not triple to be a factor in the market.

Has anything changed on KBET since it went on the air? I only get to hear it once a year when I'm in LV, but it's always the same liners, same music, same wrong version of "Big Bad John"... are there any spots on it at all? There were only a couple an hour when Beasley had it.

There seems to be more AM no-shows this month... 670, 1230, 1340, 1400. Usually at least one of them is listed.

JH's comments are well taken. When Beasley took over KDWN they thought the "Big Stick" would make it a hit, big Tv spot campaign, morning news block with a large cast, short newcasts all day & night. They gave it a good shot..the staff was very good but because it's AM in this market, in this day ang age, it didn't work.

The big AM's in major markets were big for many years, although some of them are not doing so well now.

My involement in LV AM consisted of 16 years as PM news anchor at 970/KNUU...it used to be KNEWS but several years ago they went brokered "money" programing. We had better ratings doing all news, but new owners, Business Talk Radio Network,
made more bucks by brokering. On april fool's day of this year (no joke) I was laid off. It wasn't a complete surprise as BTR has money problems. The bouncing checks were a clue, although they did make them good. KNUU has also lost over half it's cume from a year ago. I like to think it's because they dumped me. I came here in '95 after 20 years in San Francisco radio & TV, It was a good run at KNUU so I can't complain. The folks there(the 5 who are left) are all good people and I wish them well.

Bob Agnew at KXNT was interested in hiring me but they dumped him. I guess because he was an outspoken guy. He was a pro
though, years at KNBR SF.
He left them with a 3 share,now they're down to a 2.
