Jun Reina responds to CapRadio lawsuit

From today's Sacramento Bee:

(I see the headline doesn't show in the link. It's "Ex-CapRadio GM's lawyer says any financial errors were "unitentional" as station sues"

Looks like the main purpose of this filing is to slow the efforts of Sac State to have Reina's house placed in a trust.

The arguments boil down to "The expenses were unintentional (laughable on its face), CapRadio is at fault for not catching them (Reina was CEO, COO and CFO, so c'mon) and the statute of limitations has passed (which the article points out isn't actually the case)."

In fairness, it was Sac State that permitted Reina to hold all three positions concurrently, which positioned him to commit this [alleged] fraud. So in this way they do have some culpability. If this ever goes to trial, that failure of oversight is guaranteed to be brought up by Reina's defense, if they have any competence at all.

In an absolute sense, you're right, but this is more complex than that. Somewhere 15 or more years ago, the University gave oversight to a CapRadio Board of Directors. They hired, fired and (supposedly) supervised the GM. The university only got an annual report from the board.

My view is that the University should never have given the board that power, but even in that situation, the board should never have allowed Reina to assume the duties of COO when that person left, much less all three (CEO/COO/CFO) when Rick Eytcheson retired.

"You made it possible for me to steal" really isn't much of a defense.

Literally hundreds of times, and rigged the CapRadio bank account to pay his personal credit card, the suit alleges.

Ooops.
Yes and I would like to see a response from the Corporation for Public Broadcastings reaction to this lawsuit given that at least some of that money meant to fund programs and news staff at CapRadio ended up going to Jun Reina.
