June 10: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on June 11. Discuss or comment as you please……

1908: Actor Robert Cummings (The Bob Cummings Show/Love That Bob, My Living Doll) is born in Joplin, Missouri. DYN: he received an Emmy award for his role as “Juror No. 8” in the first television production of Twelve Angry Men in 1955.

1918: Actor Barry Morse (The Fugitive, Space: 1999) is born in Shoreditch, England.

1955: KCOR-TV (later KWEX-TV) begins broadcasting on channel 41 in San Antonio, Texas. It is the first commercial Spanish language television station in the U.S. and the first UHF station in South Texas.

1977: The Streets of San Francisco airs its final network episode on ABC.

1989: Tales from the Crypt premieres on HBO.

1990: WYBE (channel 35) signs on in Philadelphia. It is one of the few (and one of the largest) public TV stations in the U.S. not affiliated with PBS.

1991: The final episode of the cult TV series Twin Peaks is broadcast by ABC. It ends with an unresolved cliffhanger that continues to be debated by die-hard fans of the show.

1995: Multiple award-winning sportscaster Lindsey Nelson, best known for his broadcasts of New York Mets baseball and college football, dies in Atlanta, aged 76. He was known for wearing loud, colorful plaid sports jackets that wreaked havoc with early television cameras.

1996: The Rosie O’Donnell Show begins a six-year run in syndication.

2006: After a 9-year run, Meredith Viera makes her final appearance on The View.

2007: The final episode of The Sopranos is broadcast by HBO. The episode’s cryptic and enigmatic ending leaves fans and critics agog with confusion, dismay, and a thousand theories.

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits…..don’t expect it every single day. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

1933: F. Lee Bailey (criminal defense attorney who served, among other cases, in the Sam Shepherd and Patty Hearst trials, and notoriously in the O.J. Simpson murder trial. Per Wikipedia, in 1969, during the Paul McCartney death rumors, Bailey "participated in a television show where he received 'testimony' from believers in the myth.")

1941: Mickey Jones (the musician and former Kenny Rogers and the First Edition member appeared on "Flo" as Chester in 1980, and made recurring appearances on "Home Improvement")

1951: Dan Fouts (the former NFL star has served as NFL analyst on CBS from 1988-93, and later on Monday Night Football alongside Al Michaels and Dennis Miller during 2000-01).

1969: Kate Snow (Good Morning America Weekend Edition co-anchor).

Some sources show Cummings being born in 1910. As we know those stars rarely give their real age.
 
1962: Gina Gershon (Melrose Place (1992 version), Sinatra, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Rescue Me, Ugly Betty) is born in Los Angeles.

1963: Jeanne Tripplehorn (Big Love) is born (as Jeanne Marie Tripplehorn) in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

1964: Kate Flannery (The Office) is born (as Katherine Patricia Flannery) in Philadelphia.

1978: Shane West (ER, Once and Again) is born (as Shannon Bruce Snaith) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

1982: LeeLee Sobieski (1999 miniseries Joan of Arc) is born (as Liliane Rudabet Gloria Elsveta Sobieski) in New York City.
