June 12 - what will happen

What do you think will be the situation on June 12th - will it be mass chaos with viewers dealing with lost and/or pixellated reception, insufficient antennas, converter box shortages, and massive complaints to DTV phone and walk inhelp centers, and manycalls to individual TV stations? Or will it be smoother than expected?

If Wilmington NC and the entire state of Hawaii are any indication, absolutely nothing major will occur and life will move on. The sun will still rise from the East.

Many of us will rejoice...FINALLY!
Yeah, many of us will rejoice for the fact that over six decades of hitting the tops of our TVs and/or fiddling with our antennas for a better picture will be done away with forever (at least here in the United States)!

And of course, June 12 will also be a big day for YouTube as lots more final analog sign-off videos will be all over the place!

Do you really want to know what will happen? Some old people in Kentucky and Alabama will see their TV stations vanish and they will call the TV repair man. Then when they are told about the conversion to DTV, the old people will claim that they knew nothing about any changes coming. Then they will call all their local TV stations to ask how come they were not notified.

converter box shortages

Unlikely. On May 23rd (my birthday) I was visiting the Bristol, CT Walmart (my best friend works there and couldn't get the day off) and that store had tons of the converter boxes. And I mean there they were sitting on the shelf in two or three neat stacks.

1. Not every city is Bristol, CT, so everybody's situation will vary.
2. Have you ever thought that Wal-Mart put the converter boxes on display in anticipation of the analog shutoff?
3. Your friend had to work that day. Boo freakin' hoo.
4. Were you expecting a birthday card from any of the staff or members of Radio-Info.com?

If you've ever been to Bristol, you'll know that's a good thing. :D
Just kidding.

a mob of outraged Jerry Springer fans will take up torches and pitchforks and march on the US Capitol

Oh there will still be those of us hitting the top of the set for old times' sake and fiddling with the antenna because we can only get most of the channels we use to get. :)

I think everything will be fine. I do have a question. Does anyone know the exact times as to when each TV station in Philadelphia, PA will turn off their analog signal on 6/12? How will the text TV station ID's look once the DTV transition is finally complete? Would the new ID's say WPVI-DT Philadelphia instead of WPVI-TV/WPVI-DT Philadelphia?

It'll simply say "WPVI-DT Philadelphia".

Not necessarily true. The FCC today (6/4) put out a notice that TV stations will be able to select which suffix to use. All stations will have the option of XXXX-TV or XXXX-DT, and some will also be able to simply use the 4-character calls with no suffix.

I wouldn't exactly be broadcasting to everyone that Wal-Mart is my employer, either. But that's another issue for another board.

Walmart, unlike the broadcast industry, is actually hiring these days.
