June 18: This Day in TV History

Just a few random TV related events that happened on June18. Discuss or comment as you please……

1914: Actor E.G. Marshall (The Defenders, The Bold Ones) is born in Owatonna, Minnesota.

1952: Actress Carol Kane (Taxi) is born in Cleveland, Ohio.

1961: KBMT (Channel 12) begins broadcasting in Beaumont, Texas. The station would affiliate with ABC, giving the Beaumont-Port Arthur market three full-time network affiliates for the first time.

1993: Late Night with David Letterman airs its final show on NBC. Six weeks later, the show would begin its current run on CBS as the Late Show with David Letterman.

1994: The Howard Stern Show debuts on E!. Basically a videotaped and edited version of his radio show (with a few added features), the TV version would last 11 years.

2000: Actress Nancy Marchand (Lou Grant, The Sopranos, and a thousand other things) dies in Stratford, Connecticut, aged 71.

2001: Fans of General Hospital mourn the end of a two-decade fictional union as “supercouple” Luke and Laura Spencer (Tony Geary and Genie Francis) sign their divorce papers.

2005: Sábado Gigante celebrates its 1000th episode on U.S. Spanish network Univision. The 20 years the still-running show has been on Univision followed a previous 24 year run of the show in Chile (and syndicated, then as now, throughout Latin America).

(Just a little featurette I hope to do as time permits…..don’t expect it every single day. It’s an entirely random selection based on a quick Net search, and is not meant to be comprehensive. So, don’t post nasty messages about “you forgot THIS” or “how could you not mention THAT?” Do so, and I’ll just take my keyboard and go home…..) ;)

A few June 18 birthdays:

1908: Nedra Volz ("Different Strokes" from 1980-82, among many other guest appearances) born in Montrose, IA (died 2003).

1908: Bud Collyer ("To Tell the Truth," "Beat the Clock") born in NYC (died 1969).

1952: Isabella Rossellini (the actress has made guest appearances on shows including "The Tracy Ullman Show," "Friends," and "Chicago Hope") born in Rome, Italy.

1980: Tara Platt (has appeared on "Days of Our Lives," "Gilmore Girls," "One Life to Live," and "Passions") born in Fairfax, VA.

Also, on the side, June 18, 1942 is the birthday of Sir Paul McCartney.

One sports-broadcasting related passing on June 18:

2002: Jack Buck (b. 1924), voice of the St. Louis Cardinals from 1954-2001 (teaming with the legendary Harry Caray from 1954-69). Also has called World Series broadcasts on NBC and CBS, including the memorable Kirk Gibson walk-off home run in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series ("I don't believe what I just saw!").

When Jack Buck worked with Harry Caray calling Cardinal games they were IMO the best radio broadcasting team ever.

Wasn't Paul's 1973 ABC-TV special one of the highest rated specials from the 70s? I was a bit too young to remember it but I do remember my parents back then making that special like it was really a big deal.

Not sure if it was ABC or perhaps another network, heck it could had been HBO for that matter but in 1980 I can remember hearing Dude Walker and Doug Limerick ( for years he did news on ABC radio ) back then on Washington DC's then Q107 saying that plans for a Paul & Linda McCartney TV special were cancelled due to Paul's then Japan pot bust. I remember the news story but have not a clue as to whom was planning on doing the special.

The CBS premiere of the Late Show would actually be over 9 weeks later--on Aug. 30, 1993.

However, reruns of "Late Night" continued throughout the summer on NBC--including the first two weeks of the CBS run (but they rebroadcast Dave's first two weeks of NBC shows from February 1982).
