WOW Factoid about where it will always be (mid 1's)

Oldies 92~Seven lowest in a long time

Only one Sports Parking Lot with anything is KMVP. The rest are uninspiring...and dig this - Sports Parking Lot 6~Twenty didn't show!

btw - is it hot where you are?

My, my, my...what a tumble for 92.3. Too soon to wonder if their bid to go the Ancient Modulation route was the smartest idea? It gets more and more unlistenable and sadly they've (apparently) dragged down 91.5's numbers, too.

There's no doubt that KSLX has benefited tremendously since 2014, when Hubbard axed KDKB's format. However, I still miss the old KDKB, despite the station's notorious inconsistency throughout its history.

The true shining star (and most talented) at KSLX though is Randi Scott.... still. It's fair to say that she's not going anywhere anytime soon!

Randi arguably has the best radio voice on the Phoenix airwaves today--- by far. Love her! :p

Mother Hubbard has done quite well with the former Gumpdusky stations. The only laggard is KDUS. But at least they have the rent from 13~Ten paying the power bill.

I'll guess that all the sports parking lots are having trouble. With no games, why bother listening? I have on occasion listened to 1060 and 98.7 and found that both are struggling to fill their local shows with Suns, D'backs, and Coyotes non-news.

Last I checked, Bob Kemp is still on 1060, but that was about 3 weeks ago. No unemployment yet at 98.7 that I'm aware. If 620, 910, and 1580 just shut down, few would notice.

What it does point out is who are the creative personalities, and who are mainly commentators on specific action. There are two all sports FMs in Boston. Neither of them have live sports to attract big audiences. But one of the stations is still in the Top 10. I asked why, and was told the morning team is fun to listen to. Same thing in Philadelphia. It really becomes instructive. I wonder who are the music DJs who could still attract an audience if they didn't play music? In terms of music, the format that has been able to hold onto most of its audience through the pandemic is country. KNIX is an example.

The best sports stations and talents are not limited to sports along. They are "guy talk" stations. They are the neighborhood bar. They are "Cheers" on the radio.

Imus was not a sports show host. He was a guy talk personality that fit the sports station image.

The surviving or prospering sports stations will address "guy concerns" and "guy frustrations" during the pandemic. The marquee may say "sports" but the subject is as guy-oriented as a jock strap.

Sports radio is a man cave, not just scores and players.

Ah, the mighty 260 watts at night.

Just think, they paid $1 million for that Thanksgiving-feast of a station back in 2009.

A long way for KDUS from the trailer down on Baseline in what was rural Guadalupe (and the beacons were a great target for guys whose necks were size 15 1/2 red with rifles).

Heck, I remember when 1060 was Beautiful Music in the early 60's, thus the "Cupid" name. Now, it is more of a spittoon but Marshall Dillon and Miss Kitty ain't around to give it atmosphere.

I wasn't in the Valley at the time, but I remember hearing about 1060 adopting an "Urban" format circa 1990, with the call letters KKKQ. If that's not the worst callsign/format combo in the history of broadcasting, I don't know what is. I've always hoped that that was just a rumor. IIRC, when I moved back here in '94, it was KUKQ and was a 5th-rate syndicated conservative talker.

KKKQ was in the early to mid 1980s. One of the PDs was Steve Smith, who returned to the market to program KKFR in 1990. Slogan was "The Rhythm of the City." I think what they were going for with the call sign was a legal ID that sounded like the K had an echo... K (k..k..)Q TEMPE, but after the audience pointed out the obvious it became KUKQ.

So while Dave Pratt was doing the "Anti Jackson Rap" on one side of the doublewide, the AM was giving tickets away to the Jacksons Victory Tour on the other.

Then everyone got fired and the station went country; the station went from getting a one share to asterisks. By 1988 or 1989 it was alternative rock with Mary McCann, Leah Miller, & Jonathan L.

The KDUS call sign came about when the station was an automated mix of rock and talk shows like "Loveline" branded as KUPD2 or "The Deuce."

I remember it branded as KUPD2, but I thought they were still using the KUKQ call letters. The KDUS calls and "The Deuce" branding came on 8/21/1997 (per the FCC CDBS database), when they switched to sports.

Ah, the mighty 260 watts at night.

Non-D though, which probably gives them better coverage than when they were 500 watts and two sticks blasting away from the Mesa cemetery. Wonder if Waylon Jennings and Ernesto Miranda miss the station since it moved? YIKES!

Just think, they paid $1 million for that Thanksgiving-feast of a station back in 2009.

Immaculate Heart Media has probably collected more money in the time they've owned 13~Ten than the Gerson family did when it was KXAM.

And there's only one local show on the dominant sports station that can successfully do "man talk." It's not the morning or afternoon drive shows though.

As for the once-dominant sports station, they pretty much held up the white flag when they let perennial station-hoppers buy three hours of their airtime.

Dr Akbar, how could you have overlooked that Pedro Guererro, the inventor of Rosarita Beans, is interred there, too...YOU LOVE RICE & BEANS!!!

YIKES! Then that explains why Dave Ramsey is so enamored with Beans 'n Rice. His first affiliate in Phoenix was 13~Ten. A tip of the fez for this tasty tidbit of trivia!

Thx, Dr Akbar. ;-)

Also, I hope you & Nurse Jeff are getting your Christimas Masks ready, because this Sat July 25, KEZ will be playing 24 hours of Christmas music!!!

"Called "KEZ Chrismas in July," the iHeartMedia-owned radio station said it would also encourage its listeners to put up their trees, lights, and other traditions associated with the holidays."

Can't wait to see the Reindeer antlers on the Gremin!
