June PPM

KOOL and KESZ are the highest billers in Phoenix, but KOOL just took a huge ratings hit and now trails KPKX (98.7 The Peak). What happened there? :)

KOOL-FM had a single bad book, one which is abnormally outside the range where KOOL has been living. I see no correlation between the loss in June and increases elsewhere, so I suspect that what we simply have is a variation outside one standard error and we'll see them back at the average level in July.

Besides, buys are not made on one book, nor are cancellations made for the same reason... agencies tend to look at multiple book averages and trending, just like the diary days.

Re: KEXX: All the posters of this forum were wrong! A Hot AC/Adult Hits/CHR hybrid on a weak signal in a market with 38 pop stations is a superb idea!

It was on one week of the book ... most of those numbers were the old format.

Fair points. As mentioned, KOOL-FM, Phoenix's heritage oldies/classic hits station is one of the highest billers in the market. Yet WCBS-FM NY with a heritage and history equal to KOOL, gets high ratings but doesn't bill well. Same operator (CBS), similar format. What's the issue there? :)

CBS-FM in NY tanked in billings when they switched formats from Oldies to Jack and then, again, when they switched to Classic Hits.

KOOL-FM has been "in format" since around 1972, IIRC (I applied for a sales position while I was at ASU around then).

Still, CBS FM in 2011 was pretty much tied for 6th in NYC billings, and was the #3 FM in billings, after only Lite FM and Z 100.

In Phoenix, all the top 9 billers have practically the same billings, which are off about 35% from the pre-recession levels. So the comparison with CBS FM may, indeed, yield a conclusion that the New York station is doing better than KOOL.

We'll see about that.

On the other hand, there are new sports talk networks looking for affiliates. It would be a boost for one of the new nets to grab an affiliate which can say has Magic Johnson as one of its owners.

Wait, you're saying you're impressive .9 is a reflection of the 80s format? Don't forget you guys were a .8 as X. Then after the flip, they climbed to a 1.3 pretty quickly. That was actually impressive, but some fickle person running things decided to give up, not realizing an 80s format could work with some evolving and patience. 103.9 was heading to a decent direction until the currents arrived. I'm pretty sure that is the reason of the recent drop.

The drop to the 0.8 was the heavy-80's... The first few weeks with the currents are already showing positive results in the female demos -- so don't look at 6+. The Arbitron monthly is not the same as the month it lists.

No station can really be judged for 90 days in PPM - unless maybe you're CBS or CC or someone who launches with a million bucks of marketing and no commercials.

I noticed KKFR trying directly to defend themselves against KNRJ. They have added a little ol school to their format. KNRJ got an uptick when they added currents...I think a GOOD MIX of old and new will take the championship. ;D

KT'R's desire to appeal to Lady Gaga listeners is doing nothing but alienating the upper end of their money demos. If they want younger male listeners with talk, blow up Newstalk and be the first FM Sportstalk in the Valley.

Lord knows, Bonneville has the assets in house to do it today. Run ESPN on the AM and do some decent local stuff on the FM, not unlike the CBS strategy in Tampa.

But do TMISU still refuse to take beer money? Closed circuit to TMISU: Marriott makes a ton of money on beer & p0rn. Just sayin'

If only TMISU had a cluster so they could do both NewsTalk and SportsTalk on FM. But alas, they only have two FMs and one and 1/3 Ancient Modulation stations*.

They sure take a lot of those ads promoting higher and more powerful tower erections (strictly a technical term here). Shirley, a Bud after all that wouldn't do any harm would it? ;)

Doc, Bonneville DOES air beer spots. Miller, Budweiser, Sam Adams and even Twisted Tea.

The Nurse and I'll drink to that! But we'll need something a little stronger after hearing of Randy Michael's latest failures in Chicago and Nueva York with news on FM. How this guy stays employed in radio is as mysterious as a Sheriff Joe press conference!

Randy Michaels took on long-established CBS all-news stations in Chicago and New York and got crushed. Michaels kept boasting he didn't want WINS, WCBS and WBBM listeners. Too old! Youthanasia strikes again! :)

He would have had better luck doing FM Sportstalk on both stations as going up against the likes of WCBS and WINS in NYC and WBBM AM and their FM in Chicago ran through Merlin's money rather quickly. But then again, high rollin' Randy has a track record of going through others' money. In the case of these two former FM news stations, it wasn't Youthanasia that did them in. It was a bone-headed decision to fill a void that just wasn't there!

Not sure what any of this has to do with topic, but Nurse Jeff and I believe KFWhyEye is in the drivers seat when it comes to the November election. KT'R will probably come to the party late as they have made a programming decision to minimize politics on their talk shows. Guess Randy Michaels doesn't have a lock on bone-headed decisions!

Wow...guess we did tie it together!

My point was that Merlin tried to target FM News as the news station for young women, chocolate and Kardashian gossip. They weren't looking for the listeners to the established news stations.

I'll say one thing for KTAR and KFYI. Both stations offer more hours of local programming than all three New York talk stations. :)

From Earl Baldwin to Jim Sharpe, talk radio in this town has always been unique and entertaining.

From Jack Cole to Joe Crummey (heard Rumble* on SiriusXM today), the most memorable and passionate talkers have always been on KFWhyEye!
