June PPM's

The few tidbits that stood out to me....

  • Q102 up 0.9 to 4.6. Meanwhile, WTDY slipped 0.1 to 1.5 (below New Jersey 101.5 and tied with WRTI and WEMG-AM).
  • WOGL slipped 0.9 to 3.3.
  • When's the last time WXPN cracked 3.0?
  • WPHT is now at a lowly 1.1. The only Philly terrestrial they beat is 1000-watter WHAT-AM.

Ah dang it. We must have been typing at the same time. Didn't mean to duplicate the topic!

Hey Mods... can we delete my thread and keep this one?

What caught my eye:

WDAS-FM continues to be #1 overall. A nice bump from their recent low in May.
WIOQ handily beating WTDY in the overall numbers in the CHR wars.
WBEN and WOGL both drop, with WBEN taking a slight lead in the Adult/Classic Hits battle.
WXPN pulling some great numbers. Can't remember them being that high in recent memory.
WEMG and their AM/FM Translator combo now tied (share-wise) with full-market signal WTDY. Yikes.
WRNB numbers still in the gutter, but trending slightly up.
WPHT down to a very low 1.1 overall. Don't remember them being that low in recent memory. Can't compare to WNTP since they don't subscribe.

WISX has updated their playlist to have less "relaxing favorites" and more uptempo 2000s and 2010s music. Maybe it's a reaction to their ratings slipping in April and May, although they recovered in June even before they updated their music.

They still play Air Supply and the Carpenters once in a while, but there's a lot more Dua Lipa, Bruno Mars, and Pink now than I'd expect from a Soft AC station.

Since they launched, I really haven't understood what the heck they're doing. They play mostly exactly what I would expect from a Soft AC but then they throw in some very upbeat, sometimes danceable songs from the very recent past. They're probably all songs that are being played over at B101.1 so guess I can understand the angle of wanting to lure listeners. But the listeners they already have--people who tuned in specifically for the "relaxing favorites" might be turned off when they hear "Let Me Love You" by DJ Snake or "Just Like Fire" by P!nk come on. I mean, "Dark Horse" by Katy Perry probably makes more people anxious than it makes relaxed. I really don't get why they're playing "With You" by Mariah Carey. I don't know if B101 ever played it. It was not a hit when it came out (three years ago?) and I wouldn't be surprised if listeners don't even know what it is when it comes on.

I don't understand how it could be possible, but maybe the songs somehow test well with folks who want to hear old Genesis and Commodores. Or maybe they're not testing at all and they're just flying by the seat of their pants since they probably care less about WISX than they do about WRFF. Who knows.

I agree. The battle is numbers vs. demos. They probably get more people for the relaxing favorites, but they're all over 55. That's a problem for sales. They need to find a way to bring the age down while not killing the numbers.

Balancing acts are tricky things. That said, I have no issues with Dark Horse or Just Like Fire along with Genesis. It’s the lingering 60s and 70s I can’t as easily stomach.

"With You" was a #7 AC hit. But it would make a lot more sense for them to play Mariah's version of "Without You".

Except WBEB is #1 in most key demos.

Here's a surprise: WXTU made a big jump in 18-34 from #9 to #3. Not sure why.
Odd. What's interesting in nearby Wilmington DE, WJBR (AC) died in the ratings. 6.2 to a 2.4  Meanwhile, The country station, which operates on a translator to get better actual "Wilmington" coverage, went the opposite. 2.8 to a 4.4 WXCY (They seem to do better in the spring books. Springtime for country in the Philly area?

Anyone know if Wilmington, since it's so close to Philly and several stations cross markets, use PPM or traditional diary?
