June Ratings

Looks like Power on 105.3 is a disaster. Some smart folks at iHeart really thought this through....
I wonder how long it will last.
My question here is the Beat is doing slightly better than Power did at 96.1 but Power is doing way worse than the Beat did at 105.3. The average in the two ratings before and after seems more adverse after the switch. Is that a good move or does this signal that a new format needs to go on 105.3? I feel like we are heading to the 1992-1999 era where we were stuck with one option for top 40.

Putting the Beat on 96.1 was very odd considering the amount of Urban stations already filling the atlanta radio dial. I mean, I wish they would do better branding of the station to make it look more, i don’t know, original?? It doesn’t feel or look live and local. That’s a shame for a strong frequency 96.1.

I think Power should’ve been placed on 96.1-2 in ADDITION to 105.3.

I think every big radio company thinks they have to have a piece of the HUUUUUGE ATL urban market.

Never mind that that market, like all other radio markets+demos, is finite.

Looking at the country battle, was Bobby Bones on the Bull the whole period? I know it's only one ratings month but 94.9 was up a half point. 101.5 was up a little too. I wonder where 94.9's jump came from? Might just be a fluke or did some of the former 96.1 CHR folks "go country" rather than what ever 96.1 is playing now. The Q is up too but mathematically they didn't pick up all of Powers audience.

As a broad generalization, ratings at CHR and Country nationwide have historically tended to go up in the summer months.

Yes, CHR and Country do share a lot of audience.

It's plausible that several stations gained some of the former Power audience, including Q, Bull, 101.5, Star, etc.

105.3 is not really a signal for a CHR format intended to be market wide. iHeart made the decision that the potential benefits of getting The Beat onto a big signal outweighed the likely downside that 105.3 would become a white elephant. As mentioned above, Atlanta's Urban competition is intense.

I find it interesting that the Braves lift The Fan to such an extent. We are not privy to the breakout between 680 and 93.7, but I'm guessing that most of the audience is on 93.7. If so, it's probably the first time any FM translator in the market has gotten a share higher than the low 1's.

There was no warning to listeners that the flip would occur. You’d have to be on social media or an avid listener to really know. Most iHeart Urbans are heavily centered and promoted with The Breakfast Club morning show. Locally, The Breakfast Club has not been a success here. Young Joc at Streetz 94.5 dominates the hip-hop airwaves in morning drive but they have full market signal challenges, like Hot 107.9 too. This makes room for a full signal Urban competitor to V103 but iHeart missed the mark years ago to do this!

I do agree nothing feels like “Atlanta” when it comes to 96.1. It’s the same iHeart urban sound heard in other markets with syndicated mornings and middays. Urban radio in Atlanta has always had its own unique, local spin especially considering the music and entertainment industry here.

Yung Jock definitely doesn't "dominate the hip-hop airwaves in morning drive", and the Breakfast Club performs well enough for iHeart to put it on a stronger signal. It's been 2 months. Too early to see how the station will perform long term.

I personally always felt New Orleans' "morning drive" lasted at least till Noon. My ex brother in law worked in the French Quarter and it was rare that he was awake before noon. Even in the 1970's Interstate 10 was jammed up at least till 10 AM everytime I tried to drive through.
