Just a fun question: When did the radio bug bite you?

Just a fun question:

I was wondering if anyone had funny stories of when they realized the radio bug had bitten them?

For example, have you ever had a situation where spouse, family, friends, etc (the regular population) weren't nearly as excited by radio stuff as you were?

Or, if not, do you have any funny radio stories?

I'll give the first example -

A while ago, my spouse and I were planning on taking a trip across state.

As we were getting things ready in the morning, my spouse smartly spent her time packing her luggage.

I, on the other hand, spent my morning going to Radio-Locator and printing out radio station lists for the city we were going to, and two stops in between (so I wouldn't miss any shows during the several hour trip) and printing out programming schedules for the radio stations that I wanted to listen to on the trip. I even used a highlighter - to highlight radio stations on the Radio-Locator list that I wanted to listen to.

Well, when my spouse was done packing, my spouse quickly realized that I spent the morning downloading Radio-Locator lists and programming schedules instead of getting packed and ready - well, let's just say, my spouse wasn't nearly as impressed by my highlighted radio station lists, as I was.

For the rest of the trip, when I would pull them out - I would get the "stare of death." Now when I put a radio station list in the car for a trip - it mysteriously disappears.

That's grounds for divorce on the basis of Mental Cruelty!

The only thing I miss about our old 1993 Taurus was the radio controls on the steering wheel. It was great not having to reach over to the middle of the dashboard.<P ID="signature">______________

I was born with the bug, glued to the radio from the first minute. The first time I was on the radio I was 13 years old calling in to a talk show, and as a result of my call, the show changed its name.

In Philadelphia in the 1960's there was a popular late-night call-in show on WPEN hosted by a guy named Frank Ford. He was on for many years and his show's produced opening called it "The award-winning Frank Ford Show." When he moved on he was replaced by the midday guy, Red Benson. The first night of Benson's show, the new produced opening proclaimed "The award-winning Red Benson Show."

Being 13 and listening weeknights in bed, I wasn't able to call the show until Friday night. When I did, I asked Benson what awards he could have won before his show even debuted. He kind of sputtered and laughed, ha ha.

But damned if the following Monday night, yet another produced opening announced the start of "The award-winning WPEN Show featuring Red Benson." Benson came on and explained the reason for the new opening. I sat up in bed, awestruck.

After a few weeks, Benson cheerfully announced that his show had finally gotten some kind of commendation for something, and they went back to the original version of his opening.

But the damage was done. I got my first paying job in radio at 19. Still got one.
