Just a Thought About Country

Looking at stuff, why wouldn't someone like Cox take WFOX and flip it Country?

They could obviously get Bandy and Baily back on the air, since they are available.

I think given a better product, not knocking ABC but there are always different ways to do things - listeners would warm up to a different Country Station.

I, too, find it hard to believe that another major radio player hasn't gone head to head with KICKS/Eagle. They're fat, happy and dumb after having no competition in this market. The competition would be great for the listeners, and both competitors would be better radio for the experience.

Now...why would you want Bandy and Bailey back on the air in Atlanta? If they were so darned good, their numbers wouldn't have gotten them fired. I think they're unimaginative and boring. I don't think I ever heard a single morning show in the three years they were at KICKS that sounded like they'd done show prep.

This is a major market. How about some major talent? The answer, dear reader, is because the station owners can make a lot of money with mediocrity.

> > More Country in Atlanta? No Way!!! Between Kicks, and Eagle, theres enough country to go around. I think a different format, like a Jack, or something would work. Lots of folks on this very board have been looking for Atl to have a jack at one time or another, and I believe its just around the corner. It would be very refreshing to hear alot of various music, scattered about, verses the same ole same ole stuff. Another oldies station would be good, I know already so you dont have to say so oldies is a dying market, but which oldies?
If youre talking the 50s and 60s, yes its been way done. But what if you had 70s, and Im talking the lost 70s, and 80s. Lite fm does play a mixture, but they only touch on the varied songs of which I speak. I just think Atlanta has
country covered, and by the way, what if we did something different, like take what eagle does, and move it on over to kicks. Eagle then takes on a new image,
Rhubarb goes over as well as dallas, there your mornings are handled, and shuffle the rest around. Just think Jack 106.7 Playin what we want.. Yes that sounds much better. Country is getting old. Besides Eagle just got a signal upgrade, so isnt it a waste to continue to play country on a station that is really duplicated on 101.5? <P ID="signature">______________

Moving the lower rated format and jocks over to 101.5 is not an answer. No one is willing to do to what is necessary (spend the money) to make a new country station actually work. 101.5 has been country since the late 70s I believe first as WBIE then WKHX and 106.7 has been country for over 20 years. ABC has a nice control over the country market in the capital of the south and is very unlikely to let it go, and that also means the future owners of 101.5/106.7fm combo.

I recall someone many many posts ago making a good point that Cox is probably refusing to switch WFOX to keep V103 in second place and WSB AM in first place. I totally agree with you that WFOX would be great as a country station. Could we classify the current format on WFOX as a Hot AC Urban format if such a thing were in existence?

Has anybody listened to Charlotte radio lately? The 2 country stations, The Cat (WKKT) and WSOC, are really going at it. Because of the competition, both stations sound incredible. But I do think Kicks sounds better than it has in a while.

Please tell me...

What's supposed to be so great about "Jack"? From what I understand it's a fad and fads die quickly after the novelty wears off. Anybody remember the 80s format? No, because it lasted 3 weeks maybe.

And why is it okay for Atlanta to have as many urban or sports or any other kind of station you can think of, but a single company owning 2 country stations "has it covered"?

I mean I hate to say it, but Rhubarb is one hell of a nice guy, but how much more can you hear , hey here, good lord, Im from atl, and I just miss some of the other radio stations that were here. Greenville south carolina has some great radio because theres so much difference in that market...Have you ever heard 95.7 the ride.. What a station, they play so many different styles of rock, and it sounds so much better than dave fm...>

What about WNGC/106.1 in Athens and WTSH/107.1 in Rome? They are heard easily in Atlanta (107 in North and West and 106 in North and East). Hell, Moby on WNGC is taking away some of Kicks listeners (not much to count, but he is slowly getting his old fans back) and South 107, I believe, is moving their transmitter to Cobb County to get a better signal into Atlanta. I wouldn't count out these 2 stations.
