Just A Thought,Frequency Changes, WKTU/WFNY.

After Janauary 1, 2006, WXRK will cease to exit and a new station WFNY,pending FCC approval will make its debut with a new format..

Because Infinity will be throwing the baby out with the bath water, (this is just for discussion)why not have WKTU and WFNY swap frequencies. It would be very much like old times having WKTU at its original 92.3FM. And what difference would it make to the Free-FM station since they are turning over a new audience?

Does anyone know why WYNY and the original WQHT traded frequencies back in October of 1988?

I'd love to see that happen.
By the way, that is exactly what the folks at NEW hope is happening right now. If you are a Classic Dance music lover and you flip back an forth each time an ad comes on, you may just report that you listened to NEW the whole time. Kind of a parasitic way to get ratings, huh?

I wish someone more familiar with Arbitron would chime in on this.
Edited by MattBAA on 12/12/05 05:53 AM.

K-Rock (Infinity) and KTU (Clear Channel) are not co-owned. Makes a frequency sway difficult especially since, I believe, 103.5 is not as strong a signal as 92.3.

Signal strength was also the reason behind the YNY-QHT sway in '88. When Emmis acquired the NBC radio properties they had to divest an FM. Obviously this was before the days of the multiple ownership rules. Emmis opted to keep the Hot format but move it to the more powerful 97.1 frequency. Country, never a format to get respect in NYC, was sent to 103.5 and sold to Westwood One.

Ktu comes in pretty clearly in some areas north-east of new haven where i have noticed no other nyc radio has been able to come in. I think this is probably because theirs no adjacent frequency interference (you guys can correct me if i'm wrong)
92.3 gets bled out from 92.5 on weak radios after bridgeport and on stronger radios twards new haven.

Maybe, but by that same vein, they might just list KTU for the entire time, especially since most listeners are more familiar with KTU (having been around since 1996) than Mix.

Generally, diary keepers who flip between stations will put down the frequencies of the ones flipped between on the same line in one time period.

Such an entry might be ¨9 am to 10 AM 98.3, 99.7 103.5¨ and Arbitron will give 1/3 the quarter hours to each and "loose" the indivisible quarter hour to UUUU.

Usually, flipping is limited to in-car listening. Since in-car is only about 25% of NY radio listening, this is not going to be a major factor.

For the sake of what was heritage, it would definitely benefit Clear Channel to move out of the "103.5 Lake Success" area into 92.3. Going to 103.5 would keep the Infinity properties close to each other at the very least.

Kevin, you posted this same random thought on the Dentist's board.

The two licenses are owned by two different companies. Clear Channel owns the station that has the WKTU call letters, CBS Radio (nee Infinity Broadcasting) owns the license to broadcast 92.3FM. Exchanging the two stations for whatever mindless reason you have will never happen.

Example: I own a large house on the west side of the street, you have a ranch on the east side. You ask the town to give you my house because your parents' house was on the west side of a street when you were growing up. Does THIS make sense to you? Didn't think so. Radio licenses are owned by corporations who don't give a rat's buttocks if you remember there being a station once upon a time called 92KTU. Have Clear Channel sell 103.5FM off and then try to buy 92.3 from CBS and then MAYBE they will call it 92KTU and you can dance around.
