We did pass the 10K mark and by quite a bit ..
Did we really discuss John filling in for me when I visit my daughter in South Florida? I guess that's a moot point.
I have had the privelege- and I do mean privelege- of being the front man for many successful fundraising efforts during my career. Please let me use this forum to thank the following people-
Bluewater- I can't think of another company that would have the guts to throw caution to the wind, and allow such an inventive approach to fundraising. Yes, we played Marie Osmond twice yesterday, and we also received money to NOT play Marie Osmond. The listeners got it- and enjoyed it, because they never knew what would be coming out of the radio next. I am still waiting for the first e-mail or phone call asking "what the hell are you doing?".
Rick Peters- one of the few remaining programmers who depends on the sum of his experience to make decisions. He signed off on the idea immediately. Giving us permission to do something so unique was the lynchpin to its success.
Terry Barber- Guess who was there at 4:50AM to answer phones, coordinate, and pitch in? That says it all!
Jay Scott- Tracking down and setting up dozens and dozens of out-of-format songs was a monumental task. Jay has been really under the weather and pitched in for 10 hours (while doing all his other production too!) without complaint.
Rad Dodson, Lisa Matthews, Daphne Stephenson, Angie Jordin- These sales people could have been out putting commission money in their pockets on the final Friday before a holiday weekend. Instead, they put in long hours taking down credit card info, finding songs, and acting as messengers between the phone bank and the studio. Amazing!
Tom Jones- Our chief engineer was above and beyond with all technical aspects and setting up the 3 hour simulcast on Alice and WACV.
Dave Sommers and Lance Houston from 'Bama Country- eagerly facilitating the airplay of songs in their library and helping any other way they could on a day when their own station was swamped in the effort to help.
Terry Shaw, Kandice Johnson and Ebony Walker- who were busy enough preparing the conmpany's administrative agenda for the long weekend, and still found time to help every way possible.
Ben Hagler- He used his considerable influence and contacts to get local businesses to contribute, and they did- BIG!
Skipper gets it. This isn't an inter-company competition. This is why we're in radio. I have had a career I will put up against anybody's- but days like yesterday are the ones I will forever remember.
Why don't we, as an industry, do something from the same location in a show of unity- and demonstrate the power of radio for a positive purpose?
I wish you all could have been in my studio yesterday as donors and displaced alike called for support. The best moment came as a couple of JAMZ staffers were walking by the Alice studio when Rick James was playing. Their priceless double-take, perhaps wondering if I had crack flakes for breakfast, was a moment for all to enjoy.
My last South Florida radio station took another dive in the trends yesterday. They are down about 73% since they cut me loose a year ago. Now they want me back and they can shove their job. Their ass is like the universe- infinite and ever expanding.
Bluewater, and Montgomery are better. This is fun, and I want more of it!
