Just how "cool" is Frank?

I even hesitate to bring up Cape Cod radio since it incites you guys to start kicking each others' sand castles down but I'm back from a few days in Hyannis where I kept Beryl at bay & had a chance to listen.

I didn't listen to AC since I'm beginning to think they're all basically alike. The people who stayed in the hotel room before us had set the clock radio to WQRC though so I woke up to them & thought the interaction on newscasts was good. Music was standard mainstream AC stuff. I was surprised Sandab runs 2 AC stations in the same market, although Ocean is softer.

Forgot to listen to The Rocket. Didn't bother with The Rose as I have no appreciation for CHR radio & my opinion wouldn't be a valid one.

Now on Frank, I thought they were good. Keep in mind they are jockless which makes them a building with a computer & the computer plays music. Same goes for my house except I don't play spots for myself, but that sums up my opinion of jockless stations. Musically I heard some 70s (Dream Weaver, Blinded By The Light) but they sounded to me like a Classic Hits station playing primarily 80s, 90s, & beyond (Alanis, Counting Crows, Marroon 5, even Daniel Freakin Powter). I heard them saying they're The Cape's most listened to station in homes, offices, businesses, etc. I'm not sure about that one & can't see a station that plays You Shook Me All Night Long middays ever being big in offices or businesses. Overall, I wish I could get them here in RI as the concept of the Classic Hits format that extends further than the 80s is a good one, but as far as Cool vs Frank I really think they're playing in different ballgames. I wouldn't call Cool 102 acoustic or Triple-A by any means, but regardless of how much they rock at times, they have that mellower image. I don't think you'd hear a lot of Dead, Elvis Costello, Little Feat, etc on Frank.

Time will tell but I just don't see a loyal Cool listener suddenly wanting to hear Howard Jones & Prince. I think they can co-exist but don't know enough about Cape radio to venture a guess as to which other stations their audience will come from. I'd almost think Hot AC rather than Cool 102.

Now play nice & watch the sand castles please guys.

The Frank station that you described sounds different from the Frank stations that are in New Hampshire and Maine. While the Frank station on the Cape sounds more like a Jack or Mike Station, Frank in NH and Maine sounds more like a classic rocker, granted not quite as heavy. I've always thought that Cool 102 was a classic hits station with a triple-A flare. Perhaps Cool 102 and Frank aren't direct competition, but Frank is somewho wedging itself between Cool 102, 106.1 WCOD, 92.7 WMVY and perhaps 104.7 WKPE (The Rocket).

Maybe it's me but despite positioning themselves as a variety station (we play it all) I felt they were rock-based top 40. I didn't hear any soul music, disco, ballads, or "oh wow" songs like you hear on Boston's Mike. It was more like WROR meets MIX 98.5's Whatever Weekend. That's perception on my part only & not a criticism. I listened on & off but kept gravitating back to WCTK, Cool 102, & WMVY. I did listen only to Frank on the way home from Hyannis until I started to lose them around New Bedford & just felt they were top 40 based rock, which is what Classic Hits is, but playing less 70s & getting into post Y2K music. Imaging is good with a little attitude. I can see them taking listeners from WCOD.

Cool102 has been steadily declining and I see Frank is doing well in the latest 12 plus but Frank is a new station. Can an unstaffed station survive in the long run on Cape Cod?Isn't survival down there more a matter of local ad dollars than even ratings?I've heard many of the sales people have been doing it for years and have built up a relationship with clients that pretty much supercedes how well the station being sold is doing.I checked WKPE's website and it doesn't tell me much more than they're classic rock.I wonder if they're more competition for Cool102 than Frank. And Frank is Nassau which isn't exactly known for promoting the betterment of radio beyond just playing music.
