Just in time for Halloween...

Here's a gruesome thought that occurred to me (no idea why) sliding in the rain this morning after voicetracking Flashback Saturday Morning last night (maybe that’s why):

Has anyone done their air-shift from 'Beyond the grave' via voicetracking and then DYING before the VT aired? Would someone try to catch it before it went on (if they even even found out in time)? I know we've run the odd old commercial in the past 'post-voice-death', but that was just poor ad freshness (IMHO) on our part...but imagine a whole air shift by a talent who isn't even alive when it airs! One thing to not be in the studio, another altogether to not be IN EXISTANCE!!!

Just a thought. Happy Halloween, everyone! :)

;D Awesome thought. Behold the power of Voicetracking! Able to keep young talent down and from growing, while lining old guys pockets with tip money

and now you know......the rest of the story

Weighing in from the SF Bay Area, here (been enjoying the Atlanta postings for a while). A station in San Jose let VT's continue to air for at least a month after a popular DJ passed. I don't recall if they ran a disclaimer, but listeners were well aware of the situation, and there seemed to be no backlash.

That's pretty ubelievable. Which station/personality was it?

...I had been tearing my hair out trying to recall the jock (sorry, working too close to the xmtr has fried my brain). The station was KRTY, country format.

Ed Beck, a voice over guy did the VO's for WXNR (a 99X clone in eastern North Carolina). He died about a year ago. XNR was fairly slow in getting him off the air. In fact, you'd almost think you could still hire the guy according to http://edbeck.voice123.com/.

From what I gathered, he was a typical radio introvert, shy, overweight, heart problems, no friends outside of the booth or internet. Nobody knew how to get into his original web site, which was how he handled the majority of his client work, so his stations had no idea unless they happened to surf the home page of the station he did a weekend shift at. He was also a prolific radio-info poster. He died at the ripe old age of 36.

Thank God I found a woman who stopped me from being a clone of him.

Good post Cleavo. As a co-worker of yours, if you'll let me know when you're gone, I promise to pull all your voicetracks. :) Or not. Whichever way you'd like.

Thanks - hopefully, though, when that time comes - I'll have more important things to do than to call YOU. :)
Besides, I'll probably enjoy having the last word after I'm gone - just don't let me announce any "live" remote broadcasts that I'll be supposed to be at that next weekend...

Tim:

I take it PERSONALLY as to how you described Mr. Beck. By the way, it's been almost exactly a year, since his death, fyi.

Ed was a GOOD friend of mine and helped me on several projects. In fact, his voice-over work is what helped launch "The Delta's Oldies Channel, AM 1520" and his voice is still on the air.

He was not any more overweight then any radio person who sits on their ass a few hours a day. He was hardly shy and he made friends over everyone, listeners..co-workers or whoever he came across(He did weekends and swing for Press Communications)

Another FYI TimmyKimmy, he had a girlfriend.. that's who found him dead. He was found dead in his apartment after he didn't show up for a shift and didn't call in.

He had no health problems to speak of.

Next time, don't speak from your a**hole and insult my friend unless you know of what you're speaking about.
