Just Like Being On FM

The KFWhyEye Kool Aid must be flowing at the Van Buren Clear Channelplex. The FM lacking 5~Fifty is urging listeners to buy an HD Radio for Xmas so they can listen to the Valley's #1 talk station on FM. Well here's a suggestion from the Buckeye Media Hut - blow up KNIX and put KFWhyEye on 102~Five. Then they'll really be on FM!

Nurse Jeff and I've struggled with naming this year's Radio Turkey of The Year until now. At first we thought the prestigous winged award should go to the See BS'ers who put so many talented KOOL people out of work and gave us that wretched All Santa format on Halloween. Then we thought about the magnificent job Clear Channel has done on destroying KNIX since Time & Willy departed just about a year ago. They are truly more worthy of the shame they deserve. While Buck Owens may be in Hillbilly Heaven, there'll be Hell to pay for what CCU has done to KNIX!

I wonder if they're waiting to see what PPM numbers bring.

But for now... The problem (and it's not a bad problem to have) is that CC's Phoenix FM signals all do pretty well ratings and revenue-wise. Mix 96-9 was my pick for a dog, but it actually seems to perform adequately. The Coyote is a money printing machine with almost no overhead. Kiss FM is performing and KEZ is a gold mine. KNIX is the weak sister right now, but would CC want to blow up a heritage Country station and simply give KMLE the whole audience? I think not. So blowing up a CC FM and inserting KFYI, which really needs to be done, is hard to justify financially....unless KNIX completely craters.

And therein lies the rub. Is there anyone left at KNIX who can stop the bleeding, or is it being run by remote control out of some other market?

If KNIX bills enough with the now reduced overhead, do they care? Would KFYI on 102.5 bill any more than it does now at 550? Moving to FM alone won't fix the 55 to death problem, that requires a programming change or two.

Which will probably happen if (1) Janet Napolitano goes to Washington and Jan Brewer does a lousy job in her place, or (2) she stays here & finishes out her term. Either way, J.D. Windbag will probably run in 2010 (he said as much even before he got fired by the voters of the 5th Congressional District) - if not for Governor, then as a Republican challenger to John McCain for his Senate seat.

Ol' Buck would really be sad to see whats happened to his former cash cow he owned for over 30 years....!! Say what you will, but KNIX and his other station, KUZZ in Bakersfield (still in the family) were his pride and joy and really made an impact locally and NATIONALLY in the country music industry.

But then, he made something like 84 million on the sale to CC 8 years ago.....not a bad return on investment since he paid $75,000 for the FM in 1968.

A real tragedy indeed.

When KT'R announced their move to FM several years ago, Nurse Jeff and I advocated KFWhyEye move to 96~Nine...then the weakest CCU FM. Earlier this year we switched the likely candidate to 95~Five as Mix is doing better and Smooth Jazz doesn't in the coming PPM world. Now the Wheel of Frequencies lands on 102~Five as CCU has screwed that station up six ways from Bakersfield.

Happy Thanksgiving to the geniuses at 44th & Van Buren...they have much in common with the turkey on their tables!

If KYOT falters in PPM measurement, then billings presumably would suffer. In which case, it makes great sense to put KFYI on 95.5 FM and then CC works to revive KNIX.

Radio ain't rocket science, but it can be a bit like calculus.

As for programming depending on JD Hayworth, don't bet on anything he might do just yet. McCain announced his intentions to run again to basically fend off the GOP young turks (ok, younger turks.). McCain might be vulnerable in a primary, but he's still a tough bird. If you beat him in a primary, you're golden. But if you take on the big guy and lose, well, your political career takes a biiiig hit. It's a risk JD or any other GOP politico would have to consider.

As for governor, that job pays $90,000 or so. JD made $165,000 as a congressman and probably makes good coin at KFYI. You do the math.
