What about The (now departed) Buzz?

Phase two showed quite an uptick - and that was LONG before The Wolf whimpered on the radio. Maybe it wasn't such a good idea to change the format?

This boards fascination with Trends is amazing. It is the
four book that counts. For what it is worth I scanned the
monthly numbers ( key demo) as they passed by my desk. Which stations
looked strong in November. JACK is at its peak, but will it
last? The remaining stations jumping for the month: KMPS,
KIRO, KRWM, KPLZ, KBSG and KZOK. Many stations looked pretty ill.
What does this tell people? Aren't the stations on the rise the stations
that everyone says are going to die each year. Somehow they just keep
coming back. Which stations are the top billers each year. These six are
always in the hunt because they don't react, they adjust. That is why
agencies buy them. They may drop for a book, maybe two, but they always
come back in key advertiser demographics.

The BUZZ may have its best book in years, prior to becoming WOLF.

Got a buy for an adult male rock music station, morning drive only this week.
Guess what, Seattle doesn't have one any more. KISW is talk, KZOK is talk,
BUZZ is gone, KNDD is too young and having trouble. There was a no-JACK
dictate. The advertiser skipped the Seattle market. Where can you hear
adult oriented Rock or Classic Rock in the morning? Seattle used to have
two or three stations rocking. Classic hits and JACK isn't rock. Are guys
just listening to satellite or their I-PODS?

Maybe, maybe not. The JACK voice over gets old quickly and there are already signs of wear on other JACK stations in the US.

Radio trend gossip is 5% fact and 95% bulls--t. A station like KMPS isn't going to die. Nor is KRWM. Or KUBE. And DEFINATELY not KIRO.

In other words, that's just the way it is when your station has a market monopoly on any given format. Listeners are always going to want fresh air for a while, then switch back to your station. So in the end, you really lose nothing

The Buzz was pretty much BJ and Leykis and their listeners. What killed them was the constant shuffling of programming around those two, BJ's constant suspensions for whatever reasons (and REALLY bad audio processing.)

Just when things were finally looking halfway decent, the plug was pulled.....

With no other radio station that plays rock in the morning, yes. The closest "adult male rock" station to Seattle that still plays music in the morning is KISM (the dropping of music in the mornings on KISW and KZOK is actually getting them noticed.)

Very good post, djdan. I would not know what needs to change, but here are some thoughts. KNDD needs to develop an act that goes beyond playing End Sessions, trying to book Bill Gates, and inviting Durandi. The show just seems unfocused, and if so why would an advertiser want to buy when they and the listeners are unable to figure out what they are going to get?

We'll see what happens with KISW. With Steve the Producer joining the show, maybe music will again be in the mix as was the case when he and Savage were on KNDD and KRock. But does it need a music focus?

I can't see why KZOK would need to change at this point; Rivers' show is too well established. In the next six months, his ratings will tick up with the loss of Stern, and advertisers will see him as an old stand by.

As for me, I have Sirius. Your point is even better when considering that the switch to satellite will have the effect of whittling away at the morning talk shows. Listeners will want both music and talk, and if you want both during the morning drive in Seattle, bring your CD's, IPod, or do what I did.

I thought Lex and Terry were on KFNK (being in the North end, I can't get them as 104.9 is dominated by CKCL from Everett on north.) Besides, any good rockin' thrash metal is still WRONGLY stigmatized in the sales field. It is not uncommon these days to find metal fans who rake in more than $60,000 a year.

Please read what the buyer wanted (specifically) and what KISW offered and what was djdan supposed to do about it. (Hint: The buyer was NOT looking for a TALK show. Howard Stern is a talk show)..PLEASE?

If I ordered the cheeseburger special and I get the fish and chips platter and I'm told that's what I'm paying for-like it or not, that plate is going straight back to the kitchen FLYING. djdan KNEW what the buyer wanted. He was NOT going to let him/her down.

Programmers need to understand while all talk like Howard Stern, Bob Rivers and BJ Shea attracts a lot of people, just as many are attracted to music and talk. The talkers may be big, but they're just talk. Headbangers don't tune in to KISW to hear talk. KISW is in a real jam now with half talk/half rock format and they are losing both their own core listeners and former Buzz listeners-FAST. My nephews, who were devoted KISW headbangers rarely listen to it now, sticking to CFOX. Many of their friends and many of mine feel the same way. It's all just not working together in the current frame and could eventually kill KISW if left without a more music centered format...soon.

I think the best solution is for Entercom to give Rush back to KVI, Medved back to Salem and reform 770 into The Buzz. Or buy another AM...NOW. In a PERFECT world, Medved would have a happy 50,000 watt home on 820 kHz and Medved's contract itself is worth trading for say, 1590?

Doesn't solve that damn chicken/egg controversey, but it does get one more problem off Entercom's back....
