If only 94.7 weren't owned by KLove...

;)

OK, I get that you meant 94.1. You won't see it because even though they're owned by the same company now, there's still going to be a feeling of protecting territory. Snap is Ridgeway Loop's baby, where 93X is Union's territory. They'd much more likely reformat separately than just flip-flop with each others.

Both stations will eventually have to flip. MFS is a long-time underperformer and is now in a steady slide that has it trending below a 1 share.

Snap is running a format that has no audience in the Memphis market. The chances of them ever getting above a 2 share are virtually zero.

WLOK, that little 1000/250 watt station near the glove compartment soundly beats Entercom's bottom four -- Snap, Progressive Talk 680, MFS and WMC-AM -- COMBINED.

680 is still on the air? ::)

Just a quick point of order. WLOK, like most other Class C AMs ("local" or "graveyarders") is 1 kW fulltime. The 1kW/250W rule changed back in the 80s.

It's not an important point. The nighttime power upgrade meant little. While the stations got 6 dB more field strength, the noise floor went up too with the incoming skywave, so it was close to a "wash."

Still, one cannot be impressed with how 'LOK has hung on with FM competition.

Oops. Typo. That should read, "one cannot help but be impressed...." Sorry, Mr. Gilliam.

I actually think that is one of the three things hurting 93X.

1.) That is the urban location for the majority of it's signal. I think the transmitter is located somewhere off of Jackson Ave. While the station targets white males located on the fringes.

2.) That awful, awful morning show. That ratings slide started once Howard Stern left. I mentioned in a post in late '05, that Stern leaving wouldn't affect the ratings and I was wrong. Rover was the CBS replacement for Stern in the central US. Every one of Rover's affiliates has since dropped the show, with St. Louis being the latest. The only affiliates left are Cleveland (Rover's flagship), Rochester and Memphis. The show doesn't fit the station and it doesn't fit Memphis.

3.) Arbitron's rating system. Correct me if im wrong, but doesn't Aribron only contact people who have home phones. Many of the male 18-30 demographic, such as myself, do not have a home phone line and instead have a cell phone.

I think the station has been sounding the best it has in recent years. It's music now has a wider range in rock, its less repetitive, and the jocks sound awesome. I think that switching the fequencys between 94.1 and 92.9 isn't such a bad idea.

Thats my $0.02

Arbitron is starting to call cell phones now.

Had Entercom stuck to the game plan, we wouldn't be having this discussion. Upon his promotion to OM, Brad would have flipped 92.9 to country, and ended the free ride on Murray Rd. Now if Jerry can keep his mits off Snap long enough for the Director of Rhythem to do his magic, we'll all see who should be running the show on the Ridgeway loop.

Just my $0.02.

When you have real personalities and live on air jocks and real music, WLOK will always sound good because they are very consistent and have a very good stable of talent and sales staff. And they are heavily involved with their listeners. Cant say that for Entercom.
