Just random questions......

KODA 1010-AM started out as elevator music and stayed that way until ? There were actually live people on the air, but they were very limited, usually just to half-hour ID's, weather and news bulletins, etc. I was going to say that they went to "nountain of Music", an automated elevator programming, but that was KXYZ when they quit using live personalities like Art Gliner, one of the best legitimate all-night voices I have ever heard, second only to Hirt Porter.

As far as a return of "The Big 610", I would venture to say that some of us old timers would love to see a re-incarnation of the station simply for nostalgic reasons, but that's just not going to happen. 2 of the 4 sports stations here in Houston are destined to fail. I couldn't imagine 610 being one of those. Now, that's not to say another AM station here in Houston couldn't do an oldies/Top 40 based format that would be successful. 790 has the right signal for it, and could stand a makeover. Someone would have to pry the KULF calls out of Roy Henderson's hands (I'm sure a few Benjamins would do the trick) and resurrect the old 79 KULF as a true oldies station.

Could KILT 610 try a "Rewind" type of program like WABC in New York does?

I am flattered that you remembered me. Life was very interesting at KFMK back in the day. I would be happy to field any questions you have. All the best, Cy Statum

Where were the studios back then, Cy? I talked to Beau Weaver a few years ago and he didn't really know what happened to shut the station down. Do you? I've never heard anything like the late '60s KFMK, except maybe KPFT in the early days...

Hi Michael. The studios were at 1900 Medical Towers Building. That put us on the top floor. I left the station in December '68 because I had to do a tour of duty in the military. When I got back to Houston in the summer of 1970 I heard that it had changed ownership and was doing religious programming.

The station did draw considerable political heat so I was not surprised that KFMK went away. You mentioned KPFT. When they were bombed off the air, we would let them have a few hours a day to broadcast over our airwaves to raise funds to rebuild.

I have great memories of those days. The air staff was a real family and we felt close to our listeners and the music community. In addition, we were visited by virtually every major group. I remember going to see a Doors concert. I had to leave the concert early to do my late night show. At 12:45 I heard a knock on the studio door: It was Jim Morrison with a case of Miller under his arm. We did my show together and he stayed until I signed off at 6:00 am. I drove him to his hotel and he introduced me to the band and we partied until noon. Just another day at the office. ;D
