This lame Jack / Nine format is a FAD. 80's was burned out quick. 70's burned out quick. Jammin Oldies burned out quick. Jack is a horrible idea.....that was invented by the brains of Canadian programmers playing a variety of crap that shouldn't be played back to back. Hell....WXLC been doing it for years and I can't stand them! But there was no format name for what XLC was doing until it became known as Jack.

To blow up a heritage station like WJMK, AS WELL as being the ONLY oldies station for the market....... was the stupidest thing I've EVER seen from Infinity!

They could have blown up WCKG..... that would have taken it out of its misery.

Now as speculated, NINE has a competitor which will be the nail in the coffin since they don't even show up in ratings AT ALL. They can't last.

Sell the NiNe and WKIF cluster to Flying Bear Media so they can do the real money making format for the 92's again. It's flippin' OVER.

I lost brownie points for Infinity today. This is the most stupid thing I've EVER seen since 94.7 flipped from several formats within a few years and couldn't make up THEIR mind.

The Canadian Jack format WORKS by taking those archaic CanCon laws and using them to their advantage...playing a lot of "Oh Wow" songs that were ONLY hits in Canada (Gowan, Parachute Club, Kim Mitchell, Blue Rodeo etc...). The Jacks, Bobs & Daves up yonder have brought back a lot of stuff that hasnt been heard on Canadian radio since the early 90s!

Whatever you do, dont blame Canada...they're doing it right!

It doesnt have the same appeal here because it's the same stuff we've been hearing for years, only repackaged. The American Jack's sole hook is the juxtaposition aspect.

And 'JMK's PD actually thinks he's playing stuff the "audience hasn't heard in years??" Nirvana into Men At Work? Vanessa Carlton into Asia? Tone Loc into Uncle Kracker? Has this dude every been at any Karaoke bar on Rush/Division the last 5 years?

I dunno...

get em while they're still here!

cLiCk >>****104.3 WJMK****

Makes sense about the "canadian artist" requirements up there... but I still say to target a specific demo with a specific format is much easier to keep people listening... at least for me.

The page has now reverted back to the Oldies motif. Don't know why but that's a quirk I notice right now.

I also think--if anyone has the nerve to publicly complain (like I did on their site last nite), this could be the shortest format change since Z95 became Hell 94.7 in March '91. Either that or Jack won't last til Xmas, maybe Nine as well.

how do you REALLY feel

typical closed radio mind. Where is the evidence to back up your claims?

The same with New York's WCBS, both have reverted back to the oldies websites, pushing the stream. This is where both are now. Right now, I can't get the stream because it keeps buffering (I only have dialup). Anyone could try, www.wcbsfm.com, www.wjmk.com. They both stream, so try it out.

The WJMK stream worked last night at 10PM for me, all with the 104.3 WJMK jingles and everything.

It will lose its appeal quickly in the US. MAIN DIFFERENCE------ A) In Canada, it is run like JACK is your friend. With personality radio. And a lot of the music played in Canada is way diff than here so the format composure is different overall. B) In the US it is a jukebox, jockless, or liner jocks. (The industry will never learn)

> 80's was burned out

TJ, except for Star Columbus, and WXXY, who else in major markets ran a mainstream 80s format? The 80's format that everyone else launched was 80's Classic Rock, Rock, Alternative, HOT AC based etc.... The mainstream 80s format was never even really launched!

>>70's burned out quick.

Again, who did 70's? Most markets had a 70's Classic rocker, or a 70's AC outlet, or nothing.

Jammin Oldies burned out
> quick.

Of course it did. The format never grew. It launched, they pared down the playlists, they rode the wave sapped the revenue and ******d them when they downtrended. (See it is harder to actually put some money in it to let it evolve and be more profitable.)

Jack is a horrible idea.....that was invented by the

TJ, you are wrong, read above.

Dude, WXLC is HOT AC! Close to a Jack? Sure, but a different beast.

I agree, but they are not commited to the format and to evolve them to 70's.

CKG makes money, for now. That will be over soon. Infinity is STUPID. CKG bills but their overhead is horrendous.

All those frequencies will only succeed doing one thing. Niche programming.

Yes and no TJ. People can't realize this. I think you can. From a creative standpoint, Chicago lost a leader. The format still has a demand, if evolved PROPERLY. Infinity is on a kick because Jack in Dallas is Top 5 25-54 , and can be run on the cheap, along with the perceived death of traditional oldies.

Not that I agree to all of it but.....Traditional Oldies, by the industry, is considered dead because, the demo for 60s based oldies is aging ahead, the 60s & 70s are radically different buffered by the Vietnam War era music in between. Also, the 70s pop music diversified more in the 70s than the 60s.

Overall, dumb move. Could of Jacked with Howie in the AM drive and retained Stever in one capacity or another, elsewhere. Stever alone, is not going to be able to carry CKG when Howie is gone.
______________

This Jack-FM Format is nothing but "The Music Of Your Life" for a new generation wrapped up in a "Beautiful Music" presentation with updaded
jingles and Imaging. JMK's PD is only echoing the corporate Infinity
suits line of BS!

That wasn't a format change--it was more of a name change. The playlist was still the dance-driven songs that Randy Michaels had installed when he began consulting and started doing the Power Pig stunting (without the Power Pig name, since 'JZQ in Kenosha was calling itself "Power 95" back then). Whether or not "Hell" was a stunt or intended as an actual permanent name change, we'll never really know. I suspect the former.
