JV & Elvis FIRED!

Isn't everyone on this page in the radio business? Obviously not if people are happy that JV & Elvis got fired... or Don Imus for that matter. I hope both of them sue the crap out of CBS and win. This is the beginning of a very dull and un-entertaining period in the history of radio. I for one won't be saying anything but the time and weather until all this stupidity blows over... very sad.

And yet.....go to the FREE FM New York Home Page and you can still be linked to the Dog House show page, and get archives as well. Yeah, they're really on top of things over there ::)

It is quite sad that radio (forced by the media using a magnifying glass) is now going to take whatever flavor was left of NY radio out. It truly is a sad time for terrestrial radio. There is no choice anymore, nor variety, just the same bland variations on a theme, and now they are taking away much of the dressing from the salad bar which is already down to iceberg lettuce and a few tomatoes.

You guys seem to have a REALLY passive-aggressive angle towards O&A. Seriously. This thread is titled "JV and Elvis" fired but you guys are going after O&A.

Here's a few differences...

1) Imus said "Nappy headed hos".
2) JV and Elvis wrote and voiced the asian bit.

Now...

3) A homeless, uneducated man who sounded very much liek Richard Pryor says those things about Condi Rice. O&A had no control of the XM side of the bit.

The whole point of the Homeless Charlie bit was "THIS MUST BE OK BECAUSE A BLACK MAN IS SAYING THESE THINGS", because it was pointing out the hypocrisy of what hip-hop stations are doing.

Please acknowledge THAT PART first.
Give me a break. You are 100% incorrect. They have TOTAL control and created the classless, disgusting bit. It has to do with GLORIFYING and LAUGHING at RAPE.

I am VERY pleased that CBS has stepped up to the plate twice and done the right thing. As previously posted in this thread, I believe, they should be on it faster, though. They need to not be waiting as many days or weeks as they are since the "problem" is going to fester, just like it did to Imus and Elvis and JV. CBS and XM now need to fire Opie and Anthony for their vile, disgusting bit.

Have you ever been in front of a microphone?

It's not like Opie and Anthony woke up and said, "I know, let's talk about rape!". They brought a homeless guy in. The homeless guy started riffing. Both hosts realized, from the feedback coming in and the phones lighting up (and mind you, this happened LATE in the XM show) that they had something, so they rolled with it.

That being said, it wasn't "glorifying rape". Did O&A tell their listeners to go out and rape women? No. Did O&A make fun of rape victims? No. A homeless person took three very public and very villified people and ranted, and O&A let him go with it. The sheer absurdity of a homeless man trying to attack three of the most well-protected women in the world is where the humor lay, NOT the act itself.

Norton's Jon-Benet Ramsey and/or Conor Peterson humor was 10x worse than ANYTHING Homeless Charlie said.

If you read the threads on O&A, this is the SECOND time in less than 30 days they have GLORIFIED and made a joke of RAPE (from the New York Times on Saturday 5/12). The first round was enough for the New York State lottery to drop them on Free FM in New York. The lastest, to start, Trojan condoms to drop their show. Even for those who feel theye a "one bite" clause. they've exceeded that and just since the Don Imus incident. Yes they did laugh at the idea of the act of btutally raping a woman. They were OBVIOUSLY PLANNING to make a JOKE of RAPE. If they were dogs, they would be labelled as having a "vicious propensity". Your post of this is COMPLETELY INCORRECT.

OK...let me see if I've got this straight (I'm not in New York, but do try to keep up with the radio market, since Atlanta is a wasteland for creativity).

O&A perform a bit that is tasteless, but they do so on XM, which is a charged service. People listening to O&A on XM do so with the full knowledge that their show is over the line and vulgar, at times. But, like HBO (home of the Sopranos), XM is a PAID SERVICE, and people are not forced to listen to O&A (or watch the Sopranos if the violence offends them).

Posters like Mostb1, apparently, live for the attention these boards give them. Because he/she never seems to justify why O&A should be fired for making such comments on a show that people pay to listen to.

The whole thing seems so absurd, especially from someone removed from the situation. As an outsider looking at the New York market, the postings (or rantings) of people like Mostb1, and others who call for O&A's heads, seems as backwoods as some of the people here in Georgia.

First of all, let me say that JV and Elvis being fired is an absolute joke (especially if you've heard the lame show they replaced them with).

Going beyond that, looking at O and A, I have a few problems (keep in mind, I dont particularly LIKE O and A).
First of all, THEY didnt say anything...a guest did. I understand they're responsible for what is said on their show, but come on now. Second of all, they didn't condone the rape of these public figures, which in my mind means they didnt do anything wrong.
Folks, freedom of speech is freedom of speech. If you actually support it, you need to support it unequivocally even if it's not easy to do so. I've said it before in a previous thread: I hate what the KKK has to say, but I love the fact that in our country they have the right to say it. Certainly no message put out by O and A or JV and Elvis is anywhere near as deplorable as what a group like the KKK has to say: yet these people are being crucified for it. I find it disgusting that CBS would fire JV and Elvis for what they did...a minor episode compared to what most so called 'shock jocks' do on a daily basis.

That having been said, I have a question for those of you more 'in' with the way broadcasting works. Do jocks not have a union that should be going to bat for them here?

Union? Oh please. AFTRA could care less about radio people unless your union dues are late. That's the only time they will go AFTER you...with a bat, not bat for you.

Speaking of 100% incorrect. The jist of the joke was not about a rape. It was about a drunken bum talking crap.

If it was about someone laughing at a rape that ocurred, then I would agree with you on firings. Otherwise, the humor was tasteless but it was made to a PAYING audience.

Got Freedom?

Uhhhhhhh John the context of the joke was a homelessman having sex with Condaleeza Rice against her will and punching her in the face in the process, that is what was said. Anthony then stated " I would love to see the look of horror in her eyes as you're holding her down and F ing her...". That's pretty much the textbook rape scenario, ergo they were laughing at a homeless man describing a sex act with a public official that was a rape scenario.

Got reality?

Quote from BoardopJ >>>Please do me a favor and get off your moral high horse. "Honorable lady", stupid O and A never assisted in the death of 3500 men women and countless others. Delusional and deluded.<<<

[b] For one thing, I've never attacked anyone on either this board or the NYRMB Board because they've posted something that I've totally disagreed with them.

Please don't tell me to get off my moral high horse. You don't know who I am, what I'm about , what my position is and what type of leadership position I have.

Shouldn't this be a board where we can agree to disagree without personal attacks?

I don't understand how can anyone defend O & A or see what took place on their show as cute.

Thanks,

And the debauchery continues...

I first read the posts on this thread entitled "JV and Elvis Fired" only to end up reading more than 75% of the posts here having to do with O&A or Don Imus. To be honest, I don't care anymore.

If the executives want to further promote broadcastration, then continue to go in this direction. Let every single group of individuals who just happen to be pissed off by somebody else's retarded on-air stunt place just enough pressure to force others out of a job. Anyone in here ever listen to an Urban stations morning show? If I had a nickel for the number of times I have heard a dumb ass Urban morning show host tell offensive jokes about white people, I could retire.

I say let everyone speak their mind with no censoring. D.L Hughley said it best about John Rocker, "I wasn't mad about what he said, I was mad about the B.S. Apology."

Otherwise, we should just start to ban stand up comedy, sitcoms, cable television, porno magazines, and all other forms of media that might offend. Maybe we can also write in Ted Stephens as President in 2008 and we will all get our wish.
