JVC Broadcasting's Concerts

JVC is doing one heck of a job getting out to the masses, I think. Last weekend was the Beatstock concert. In July they had Freedom Fest at the Ducks Stadium, a country concert with major label artists. Then they announce VETS ROCK on September 18th at Bald Hill with top top performers and some well known local bands. To cap it off they landed a FREE Vince Gill concert that was announced at a Village Board Meeting in Patchogue last night. The date is not set. But I suppose listeners will ahve to WIN tickets since there is no charge. The concert will be broadcast throughout the country as well. It will be at the performing arts Center in Patchogue. Vince Gill...This is BIG. This freakin station is only 8 months old, but its doing amazing things. Check out the info on the 9/18 Concert.

On LI over the weekend and yes, My96.1 is impressive. Wish they would fix their audio. You have to wonder if Barnstable realizes they missed the boat here big time on 94.3. Since Magic in the early 90's was scoring 4 shares, the station has been backwards: each new format = lower ratings.

The big surprise was Party 105's Throwback Weekend. Would have been excellent on 94X or even WALK, but it was totally out of place on Party, especially when they were playing songs like "Endless Love" by Diana Ross & Lionel Richie and "Shining Star" by the Manhattans. At times it sounded more like WHLI FM or CBS FM. I'm surprised I'm not seeing the 4,000 posts here that usually go with any Party 105 move.

Speaking of WALK, wow, I just hope Gary Burns' license protest against Clear Channel stations in the Aloha Trust gets the FCC motivated to make CC sell off the properties, because WALK needs new blood fast. The music is too focused on WBLI's audience, and WBLI is hitting on almost all targets right now and the numbers are starting to show it. Kudos to WBLI for great storm coverage, heard some airchecks. WALK once owned that type of coverage, but I'm told they were MIA for the most part.

And of course WLNG had awesome storm coverage!

No WNYG and no WXBA... rumor has it that Brentwood UFSD is getting out of the radio biz?

I wonder how last Sunday's concert featuring Eric Church and ten other country acts went. Did anyone on this board go to it?
If the amount of commercials being carried is any indication of profitability, My Country WJVC seems to be doing great. While the heavy spot no load is no fun to listen to, I keep in mind the many advertisers they attract may make it possible for the station to remain country for many years to come.
And many of the ads are clearly intended for a country audience. There are many commercials for all sorts of nightspots that offer country music entertainment. There is even an advertiser that provides products for horseback riders. Hopefully the station will lead to a resurgence of country music related venues on Long Island, which will in turn advertise on WJVC.
Carrying the games of the Long Island Ducks on weekends might also offer a nice boost to the bottom line.

I was at the concert. It was an all day thing. During the opening acts the crowd was sparse but the floodgates started to open up by 2:30 pm at which time people were already complaining about parking. By the time the headliners started coming on, the place was filled to capacity. There was a 1/2 line to get to the bathroom. The stands were filled as was the grassy knoll in back where there were thousands of people, lots of families too. The kids played ball in the back and the parents set up lawn chairs to watch the concert. Look at the radio station facebook page and website for pictures. This was an amazing concert with 11 great acts. Thompson Square and Eric Church were astounding, but then again so were all the acts. Veterans were integrated into the program througout the day. The Jane Dear Girls were unreal. The ampitheatre was bursting at the seems. It was incredible. So much for the notion that Long Islanders don't respond to so called "country music" which is more pop with fiddles, banjos and steels, playing a few riffs here and there. Of the new crop of singers only Bradley Gaskin was a traditional country singer, very George Jones-ish. But they were all good. Frankie Ballard is a monster guitar player - move over Brad Paisly. Long Islander Lisa Matassa is one to watch. I hope she hits the big time. She is working hard, talented, beautiful and doing all the right things. Can't say enough good about the other acts too, Edens Edge, JT Hodges, Katie Armiger. Headliner Eric Church had the crowd going nuts and played into the night well beyond his sheduled "stopping" time. He is the BIG thing right now. The concert was beyond successful.
