Looking to purchase a HD radio for the car, JVC just rolled out the JVC KD-HDR1 does anyone have any experience with this unit.

Also, do most mobile HD radio recievers show a NON-HD station's RDS data as well?? For example will my Non-HD College stations' RDS text show up on a HD radio's display?

Thanks.

HI Radio Active, if you scroll down on this board you will see a lengthy discussion on it.

And no, it does not decode RDS, but will decode a station's PAD in HD.

Thanks TX, got the info. I already ordered one, should be here this week. I'll see how it goes..

The JVC does not display RDS. In fact the display on HD is a backward step compared to the Panasonic HD. Any scrowling HD text, displays on the JVC as "****" which means "text not readable." But the JVC does have HD2/3. I guess something needed to be dropped! The most annoying feature is the the lack of real "manual" tuning. It skips over weak or no signals on AM and FM unless you hit the scan arrow quickly two times for the next channel over. This is hard to do while driving and is one of the poorest user (DXer) friendly radio around.
It does have a sensitive AM tuner and very narrow FM selectivity....it would be a DX radio except you can't tune around easily.

To Manually tune, press and hold the "Scan" button. It will beep and an "M" (form manual) will show up on the screen. You get used to it after a while.

I dont have problems with the PAD data. Only in marginal areas do I get the **** and not for very long.

Well actually using the "manual" tune is fine until the JVC receives a HD signal and then it drops out of manual, so you can't tune to the adjacent sideband! Also, "manual" drops out if you let sit for 5 seconds! So I'm still complaining about the lack of real forced "manual" mode. The "M" only blinks until it gets something else to display like call letters and then it drops out of manual. Not user friendly. makes DXing almost impossible.

The PAD data doesn't display scrowling info that shows up on the Panasonic HD radio fine....anything scrowling shows as "****" even if right near the transmitter. Sorry for being picky, but this is a $300+ radio!

I just got one of these from Crutchfield and have not installed it yet. I liked the price and the featuresbut is it a pain to use as an analog tuner or does it just take some getting used to? There are a bunch ofHD signals in my city now but the more rural stations are all analog and I don't want to have to stand onmy head to hear those. From a "user" standpoint, how is the JVC? Any other brands experienced would be appreciated.

I don't find it that hard to manually tune. It's similar to the Sony head units, if you've ever used one of those. You push and hold down to manually tune and once it's in manual mode you can advance it with just a key press. Actually the JVC is better than a Sony in this regard. The Sony only gave you about a second to manually tune, while the JVC gives you about five between keypresses before the "M" stops blinking.

It tunes like other JVC radios. Just push and hold the tune control until it goes manual. Yes, it would have been better to have it STAY in manual once you've done that, but I got used to it and it really never bothered me.. if the tuner was any good, that would not stop me from using it.
