K-earth 101 An Appreciation

Nice blog Eric. Well written. (But, apparently that's your specialty.)

I also enjoy listening to K-EARTH on the East coast to get the California vibe.

I do surf, and go to Huntington Beach twice a year. K-Earth just sounds RIGHT
when you're there. It's always on the airport rental van speakers when I arrive.
And, surprisingly on in a lot of busineeses that employ a young staff.

Part of the charm of K-Earth is that it's a part of the California Dream of the 60s, when
anything was possible. The Soundtrack of Southern California is a great positioning statement
for the station.

Wait 'til Arbitron's Personal People Meter hits the LA market. K-Earth's ratings are going to go through the roof.

KRTH has always had wonderful & famous talent...Brian Beirne, R.W. Morgan, Steele, Tuna..etc..

Sure, the playlist is restricted, but it's a good sound coming out of those speakers!! Beach Boys in the summer! You get the picture.

A few early-mid 80's are ok in the mix (1982 songs are now...26 years old)..Call them oldies or classic hits, they need some airtime. The early 80's music (80-85) was a mix of music styles, leaving the late 70's disco scene and the progression of New Wave styles entering, mixed with your basic adult contemps and dance songs.

KRTH 101 is a great station, it's appreciated by me. Listening to KRTH in the 80's and their wonderful Weekend specials then, got me really interested in oldies and hits from the Rock Era and went on a 45 RPM buying spree then (Pre-MP3 days). Now my collection is close to 3000 hits and songs (1955 onward thru the rock era). I owe it to KRTH for my still growing interest in music from the 50's thru today. It got me started!

The only thing I wish is that they'd play more hits and songs, with less repetition and more true weekend specials, like they did back then..in the 1980's.

It's easy to complain about K-Earth, but it does have...

- a very tight and professional sound
- a very consistent sound - no songs ever sound out of place (except the KOST Xmas music since Jhani took over)
- great jingles and heritage

Most importantly, timeless music. Brown Eyed Girl and My Guy may have become wallpaper, but they are great songs.

It would be nice if they'd put a little more LIFE into the station. They are so cautious. It sounds way more canned than it needs to be. They're also being shortsighed by "moving up" their time period. Once you hit the early 80's, the music is much less timeless, much less universal, and much less well-loved. They should be educating their younger listeners and "getting them into" the 50s and 60s stuff, rather than abandoning it.
What will they do in ten years? Play only 1975 to 1990? Not gonna work - that music isn't as good, nor as timeless. That's what JACK is already doing anyway.
