K-Earth 101 Having Thousand-Song Weekend (With No Repeats!)

It started at noon today. I heard pre-Beatles artists like the Everly Brothers and the Ad-Libs. I even heard a song by the Supremes that I never heard before (don't know the title).

I'm all for larger playlists...but they played Selena in the 4:00 hour today!?!? Selena doesn't fit into the Oldies format at all!!!

In the 80's and early 90's K-Earth was the best oldies station I had ever heard....great to hear variety once again..I will enjoy it while it lasts as I'm sure a format change is imminent. The greatest oldies station on earth...could it be the last?

With XM, Sirius and internet only streaming audio stations, there will always be oldies around. There will be more choices with larger oldies playlists than ever played in the future. No need to cry over Jhani Kaye's silly radio station...

K-earth was my soundtrack during an important and memorable time in my life..just as WABC when I was child or indie now..the jingles, air personalities, the overall sound of these great radio stations is as memorable as the music itself. The music channels on XM and Sirius are dull and boring jukeboxes. Congrats to Jhani Kaye for bringing back variety to K-earth. For a true music fan Jonesy and Henry Rollins on indie are musts...also when Henry Rollins talks politics it is the only truth on the airwaves.

Is this a joke? A sad attempt at parody?

"Dull and lifeless jukeboxes"???

Congratulations to KRTH for - for one weekend - sounding halfway as good as XM 40, XM 6, XM 7, XM 60, and XM 49.

Not to mention Sirius ....

Kearth 101 is sounding so good this weekend. Why can't they keep their playlist like this all the time? The variety is nice for a change.

XM 7 is a poorly programmed channel. So many obsure songs. It is terribly out-of-focus.

Jhani Kaye has turned K-Earth into a liner card radio station. It might as well be a jukebox. I prefer Jack FM over what he's done to the talent at K-Earth (when I speak of talent that doesn't include what he brought in to do early afternoons).

Based on another post on this board, my friend is already listening to live streaming radio on his car speakers via his Sprint PCS celll phone. So how far off is it for the average consumer when someone with a little computer savy can do that? Radio as we know it is nearing its death. 10 years down the road - if that - radio will be quite a different place than it has ever been during its entire life And the sooner the better for the zillions of choices we're about to get anywhere we want. Being stuck with only Cheap Channel or C-BS formats will just be a bad memory.

Better look at those ratings at K-Earth. Jhani Kaye has done nothing for the station except get it closer to its "final song".

Ratings aside the oldies format is dead...it is only a matter of time.

Dead maybe on what we know as over-the-air radio today but not dead as a format. What is closer to being dead is over-the-air broadcasting as we know it. Radio is starting to experience what cable/satellite did to tv in the 70's/80's and what the internet is doing to tv & cable/satellite today. More choices, more places to receive your entertainment = better for everyone.

Well, the truth is somewhere in between a couple of posts, if you ask me. KRTH has been around long enough, and has always been so professionally programmed, that it has that "magic" to it. Even when Jay Coffey was grinding the same 200 songs over and over, it sounded damn good. Something about LA radio, I guess. However, the KRTH *I* loved was the one back in the 70s. They played Los Angeles oldies--songs that had been played in LA, regardless of chart position, if any. I used to hear "The Spider And The Fly" by the Stones, forgawdsake. Now that was cool! Why the hell NOT play "Funeral For A Friend" in the all-night show? But now, all terrestrial radio is programmed by suits, and it's "lowest common-denominator" safe-list crap. It's as if these oldies stations think they are counter-programming direct competitors back in the Drake days--but there is no competition! No reason for mind-numbing repetition, and no currents to make it palatable. XM is a wonderland for music lovers, who don't WANT "focus," they want variety! As a radio guys, you know we love those mid-chart hits... Screw a bunch of tested, burned out top 10 songs! There was a good reason that sales-types stayed out of programming back in the day: They didn't know how to do it! They still don't, but they are completely in charge. Just take some weasel who was a PD in a medium market, imitating big city radio, and make him your executive in charge of programming. He knows the basics, and he'll follow orders. ....Ever see the movie Rollerball?

KEarth may have been something in "its day", but that day has long passed. XM and Sirius both offer more and better jocks than K Earth now gives us. Cousin Brucie , Norm N. Nite, Pat St. John. Jim Kerr, Party Marty Mitchell, Don Tandler, Bill Rock, Raechel Donahue all on Sirius, Plash Plelps, Terry Motormouth Young, Pat Clarke, Ken Smith,Cool Bobby B, Alex Ward all on XM- class act jocks everyone. Dull and boring jukeboxes? LOL You just described KEarth....with a regular playlist of 300 tunes vs over 1200 on Sirius and XM, and with specials this number goes to over 2500. Bringing back variety for one weekend doesnt make for excellant radio on KEarth, their "special" 1000 songs weekend doesnt match regular programming on either Sirius or XM. Oldies Radio is virtually dead on AM & FM, it has been resurrected on satellite radio. Join over 12million fans who know what "you get what you pay for" means!! Enjoy Free Radio..... ;D

Let me say it before Old Gringo does......

"None of these songs mean anything to Latinos not born here......so with such
a high percentage of these folks. It makes no sense for K-Earth to play them.
This would work so much better...........

'From the entertainment capital of the world....its a Vincente Fernandez weekend.....
(jingle) K-R-T-H...Los Angeles'

Ahh yes....I can hear it now!!"

Dont put it past CBS/INFINITY to pull the plug on KRTH, XM is the Future of radio, Living in the Bay Area All my life , CBS Buried KFRC , people are outraged, not me, When you cant hear Elvis or CCR, in this Liberal, Bay Area, Saturated with stations that all sound alike, XM is the way to go!! At 12.95 a month its 44 cents a day and guaranteed, no Movin format will appear! XM is taking CBS/ INFINITYS moey to the Xm bank!! KFRC had 100 songs , they played over and over,Good Golly how many times do you need to hear"BROWN EYED GIRL"? When they "FLIPPED FORMATS" on Sept 22 06, I was shocked, not that I cared but for the SPENDTRIFTS who say I will never pay for radio, well Ive got news for you ,in the late 60 s you gave up your 50 foot antenna on your roof, to get Cable TV, History will repeat itself and people will subscribe to XM sooner or later! Living in Concord Ca. leaving the Bay Area getting on 5 to LA ,try and find anything on the radio, theres nothing, Thank you XM for your Excellent reception, and your wide playlist!! KFRC 99.7 WOULD NEVER play Yummy, Yummy,Yummy,by the Ohio Express 1968,or "Easy Come Easy Go" Bobby Sherman, but they would play "Baby Love" till it put me to sleep!! Im sold on XM ,and enjoy 4 accts, a small price to pay for Real Radio! For Me the Channel is Clear XM!!!

Doesn't sound ANYTHING like a s0-called OLDIES station.

That KOLA is a joke. I heard them a summer or two ago when they were playing "LONG LOST OLDIES".

"And now, another LONG LOST OLDIE..."

Guess what they considered to fit that category?

MONY MONY
SUGAR SUGAR
HEY JUDE
BROWN EYED GIRL
BABY LOVE.

What a bunch of dopes running radio into the ground today.
