Your description of the Air check was very thorough. However instead of posting to yourself, consider the Air check Board next time around. If I want a KRTH Air check (they're quite available) I know where I can go...

Re: Hugh G. Rection, we get a Rise from your Posts..

Perhaps, "it's easy to be hard", for Hugh as Three Dog Night once sang.

On a radio note now :), I've never heard Jay Coffey on KRTH.

What was he like and does he do any air work now as PD?

Coffey was a very good jock. Before KRTH he worked at K100/KIQQ.
He always had good energy and seemed to do almost error free shows.
Very consistent. He was doing the overnight show from 2-5am weekdays via voice tracks, although I can't confirm that he still is as I rarely listen that time of day...

Hugh, we got a Rise from you...

Yes Jay is Tracking the overnights at K-EARTH. As it is a Union Station, and that was a Union slot, it's unfair that Management can just step in and take over. But that's only my opinion Phantom!

Jay "Cof-fay" and AFTRA

My guess is that it's allowed for one or more of these reasons:
1. It's overnights, which at many stations (*cough*ClearChannel*cough*) are totally automated with no air personality.
2. AFTRA has given KRTH a waiver on this.
3. Coffey was an AFTRA member before becoming management, and might well still be a union member for voiceover work and the like.
4. Infinity may have a contract with AFTRA that allows this as a small percentage of the total on-air hours for all Infinity's L.A. stations.
______________

Re: Jay "Cof-fay" and AFTRA

Sure KM, agreements like what you speak about have been around in one form or another for years. Jay is a super nice guy. His Programing Skills have been called into question by Professionals & Amateurs alike. Perhaps he has had to answer to a Consultant tying his hands up. One thing though, why does that Darn Voice Track/ Playback equipment work so well? I enjoy what the developer of the Fidelipac George Eash envisioned "-- the idea was to replace expensive D.J.'s and board operators with machines".

It's a computer, not a bank of cart machines. That's why.

(Remembering running KAAP Santa Paula from 1978 to 1981 with local voicetracking on cart and 10.5" reels of music ... realizing how much this business has changed in 25 years ...)
______________

How does KRTH pull that off if a contract is in effect?

Does the union just not care or look the other way?

Or, has everyone just gone MAD, madman.

FYI -- it's not a Union Station -- that is a bus or rail station -- union station :).

Gee, I'm sooooo glad I try to answer these questions so that people can ask them again because they post without reading all the existing posts in the thread ...
______________

You are still heavy on the caps lock ... watch or the penality is -- lethal injection -- or worse.

Great stuff ... used to listen to him and Jack Armstrong -- The All American Boy.

And, I am ... The Batman.
