I refer Masta to the Oldies board, where the subject of how Oldies stations have to attract the demographic that the major advertisers are instructing the ad agencies to go after has been discussed to death.

Summary: Advertisers don't want listeners over 55, the music suggested above primarily appeals to listeners over 55, ad agencies won't buy a station that does not have a large number of listeners younger than 55.

So I wouldn't be holding my breath, Masta. Although you are entitled to your opinion, no large market station is going to commit financial suicide by going after a demographic the agencies have been instructed to avoid. (And that is not an opinion, it is fact.)
______________

Wasn't talker Phil Hendrie the PD???

correct

Very, very true- especially within CBS. Oldies stations who want to stay in the format are moving FORWARD, not backward.

Your basic idea is correct. But don't say "no large market station"
is going to chase that demo, because many do. Whether its the most
effective financial move is up for debate.

Saul Levine doesn't count.
______________

Why doesn't he count? Aren't his stations large market?
Besides there's also..... KIXI/Seattle; KOY/Phoenix; WHLI/Long Island; WJAS/Pittsburgh; WQXR/NY; KDFC/SF for starters not to mention the full-service older geared talkers. So don't say "no large market"...say "most don't".
But if you discount them all...then yeah you're right.

Saul doesn't count, for purposes of this discussion, because he doesn't really try to make money with the 1260/540 simulcast, and 105.1 is populated by an advertiser list that hasn't changed substantially in years, and which consists of upscale advertisers who advertise on KMZT because they want to reach Classical listeners.

If Saul ever had to work to sell time on his stations, he would quickly abandon what he is doing.
______________
