K-Earth Now All Christmas

Looks like we lost another listen at work station: out of the 4 stations we can pick up and play at work, 3 of them are all Xmas now: KOLA, KRTH, and KOST. We still have KBIG "My FM" but that gets repetitive listening every day.

I thought K-Earth's mix of regular songs with some Xmas songs was perfect. All Christmas 24/7 just becomes too much to listen to after a while.

Sirius/XM 50s 60s and 70s channel is exempt from that kind of radio,, theres no way i could listen to Christmas music all day long! paying $12.95 a month gaurantees me, Cousin brucie,, Norm N Nite, and Magic Mat Alan! its Christmas all year long with Sirius/XM,,, Commercial free music + Phlash Phelps mornings on the 60s channel! Kenny in Concord
5 Sirius/XM subs since 2004

One thing I don't want in my Christmas stocking is spam.

Yea, I have Sirius in the car. If i could find a way to stream it in the store, it would be awesome.

they have a link on their web site to the Normal K-Earth format with no Christmas music. Equal time for the athiest's ;-)

If you think about it, this is the perfect time for KRTH to do it. KOST would seem to be vulnerable having to follow the playlist that Clear Channel is dictating to all of their Christmas stations. KOST does not sound the same this year and if you look at it, KRTH is doing the full court press. They hire Kim Amidon and put her on promos every hour; she even hosted their Christmas event today at Knott’s Berry Farm, so Jhani Kaye who has to know about CC's programming tactic is using everything he can to try and separate KOST from their listeners. KRTH is the closest thing to a head to head competitor that KOST has had in years.

I told ya.

;D

I have listened to Kost and it's the same songs over and over again and it's not been the same since Kim left. I switched to KRTH this morning. I haven't heard some of those oldie Christmas songs in years and they bring back lots of good memories.

KRTH is definately going after KOST.

Last evening I discovered their HD3 channel
playing loosely tracked
oldies, ranging from 1959-83
So maybe that is the same as a stream
mentioned earlier.
Unlike the jingles on HD2
these just say "K earth 101"
just like the main channel

CC is still micromanaging their stations as much as ever, even when it comes to holiday programming. If a PD wants to play a local favorite which is not on CCs mandated playlist, he or she must get authorization from the regional VP/programming.

Wonderful, ain't it?

It's sad actually and one wonders why CC is doing this, especially over Christmas music. Probably just because they can. I feel sorry for the KOST staff. I'm sure they know what to do, but can't because of some corporate mandate that's tied their hands. KRTH knows this and is playing it for all it's worth.

Wow, that is surprising. I was almost certain they were going to stick with their "three per hour" plan.

My guess is CBS-FM New York got back good results, so they decided to go for it late in the game.

So we have THREE Xmas stations in LA (and ya ya ya, KOLA is not technically in LA, but it can be picked up almost anywhere, so I'd say it counts.)

I wonder how "KOST-y" the K-Earth Christmas is. Jhani Kaye really KOST-ed it up upon his switch a few years ago. Maybe he can do a "MERRY MANNHEIM/MANILOW WEEKEND." All Barry and Mannheim Steamroller. Get out the buckets for puking.

Just checked out what they're playing...

The Tokens?

The Duprees?

And finally Augie Rios is back, after being dumped with the Chipmunks last year?

OK, I'll put up with a few Air Supply tracks to hear that stuff. (At least in the car where I can switch away.) Nice! 8)

And just think: For the first time in K-Earth history, "Brown Eyed Girl" will not be heard on 101.1 for two solid weeks. That alone should be cause for celebration. ;D

WCBS FM's November was lower than the two preceeding months, and the first week of December (11/13-11/19) was no better than November. There is no newer data, and due to a data error, we will not see the 11/19 to 11/26 data till late next week instead of Monday.

KOLA is #1 12+ in the IE, yet it barely shows in the LA market... and that is because, while it can be heard with effort, it does not really have an acceptable signal in more than a tiny portion of the LA market around Pomona. It does, of course, beat Jill and KPFK...

That may be the only good thing to ever come out of two weeks of
24/7 Christmas music! :D

Well, that's good news. Maybe CBS-FM will not do the Xmas thing next year. Or at least not so early.

I bet KOLA grabs some listeners in OC and the SGV. You're right - you can't get them in the Valley, and the Westside is hard too. And I bet Valley and Westside is where most of the Arbitron people are.

No, the meters are distributed proportionally to population in a group of geographic subdivisions of LA County and in Orange County. And the share in the LA book is so tiny that one can assume that, like in the diary survey, most LA market listening to KOLA was by people who reverse commuted and worked in the IE, where the listening takes place.

The "southwest" Arbitron region (which is the "Westside") is, other than the Antilope Valley / LA North, the smallest region of the LA market, data you can see for yourself on the Arbitron website. KOLA has no usable signal in much of the OC (except the mountains where nobody lives), the Antilope Valley, Santa Clarita, most of south Central, Long Beach, the SFV, etc, etc.

Yeah, but I guarantee you it'll be the first song played on December 26th at 12:01 AM...

The running gag on the Nashville board involving their AC station is the same, except replace "Brown Eyed Girl" with "The Pina Colada Song (Escape)".

Geesh. Pina Colada Song was already wearing thin in 1981. I can't imagine it in heavy rotation. At least Brown Eyed Girl is a bona fide classic..... Granted, one I don't ever want to hear again, but it's a good tune.

I wonder if there is some guy in LA who is sitting there going "What will I do? I MUST hear My Girl. I've gone two whole days already. Help...."

Yes, but the Westside is where all the moola is.
