K-Hits!

70's oldies with a few '60's and 80's thrown in. I even heard "Don't Be Cruel" by Elvis. Not a bad format. Too bad it's only on HD2 don't have HD in the car....and no commercials!
 
I noticed the same. They sound pretty decent.. However, my insignia portable hd radio seems to always reboot while listening to 104.7. Seems to only happen to this station. Wonder if that's just my radio or if others have the same problem.

99.7 HD-2 seems to have revamped their classic hits station too.

Too bad range is always an issue with these HD stations.

Do you have the little insignia that recharges by USB? I have that one so I'll check and see if it reboots and let you know.

That is the one. I bought it on ebay for $19. Normally it costs about $50 at Best buy. I have used it for almost a year now and all stations work fine except 104.7. Very strange.

I really like the RDS feature.
 
Marketing fail

When this was first posted I googled "K-Hits Charlotte" and couldn't find anything. Still can't. Of course, "fail" can be attributed to most anything involving HD radio to begin with.

A bit like AM stereo. Not a totally bad idea but the mass are not looking for it. The shortcomings are a bit much as well.

I found some research from about 10 years ago that deals with the Charlotte market. What it said was not very good for station owners here. It said radio listening which was down across the country was down even more in the Charlotte market. If I owned a station I'd try to find out where the missing listeners went and try to get them back.

I know where you can hear Elvis on a regular radio!

But you have to be in the UNCC or Davidson area and put up with sttic. During the day.

All this talk about HD and oldies is just so much talk! The format is a viable format for Charlotte but on HD it is virtually unknown by the population. Dave's Big Ways in Hickory is a pretty good station but it is on AM and the power does not cover the metro. This tread about a Classic Hits station or Oldies station in Charlotte is nothing more than a waste of breath and space on this board! The only broadcaster in the market that could but will not make this move would be The Ride. WRBK has a rally good little format but not enough juice to cover the entire market and certainly no money for Arbitron. Might be interesting to see what WRBK actually pulls in the PPM for Charlotte. This is not something that is just centered in Charlotte we've seen a number of attempts here in Atlanta. I've made this point several times and we all know nothing will happen so this will be my last post on this subject. Hang in there gang somebody at some point in time may wake up.
 
I found some research by the Duncan group printed about 10 years ago. It said that radio listening had declined nation wide but Charlotte saw a bigger decline than the rest of the nation. Makes you wonder who is not being served and could you get them back?

This Board is here for all of us to use. It Serves Us. I don't feel that this is a Bad Thing. I think the Origin of the Problem is the Telecommunications Act of 1996. It felt bad way back then. But that is just my opinion.

I look forward to reading the entries that are posted on this Board. I value everyone's opinion. I am getting ready to purchase some HD Radio Tuners and I'll report how that works out.

That said, Dave's Radio Station in Hickory sounds interesting. We know WAVO can ''make the trip'' well into the Charlotte Metro - why doesn't Dave add more Power? Antenna Location? Could it be Money-Related I guess. Steve. ???
 
I hear you Steve! I don't feel that money is a major problem for Dave, I understand he runs a fairly close to the breast operation without a huge staff and from what I know his revenue is consistent. Dave has two AM's in his market and the big 100,000 FM that is pretty good but could easily be so much better! The recent sales of WNOW to Radio One has certainly made Dave's FM more valuable in the market.
 
WAIZ plays some good music that isn't heard anywhere else, same for WAVO. The problem is they can't increase power due to FCC rules that limit them. AM has more protection problems due to night time skip.

Both stations are fully automated and don't have much of a signal at night plus my 2007 car radio has a really awful sounding AM section.
 
Realistically, there aren't many "smart" people with money still willing to make an investment in power increases and tower/transmitter moves for AM stations.

Danny Fontana, here in Charlotte, may have been one of the last. And we all know how that one worked out!
