K-LARD was a radio insiders reference to KRLD and was not necessarily meant as demeaning. KLIF was the 'Mighty 11-90' so radio people referred to KRLD as "K-LARD the Weighty 10-80". They were mostly broadcasters gentle tongue-in-cheek slams at the competition.
Even though they didn't sometimes make a lot of sense (remember it IS radio) stations picked up nicknames from radio folks. KLTY was sometimes referred to as 'Kitty-Litter'. WBAP 'W-BAP', WFAA as 'WFFA' (something Farm Director Murray Cox was credited with), WRR (AM) as simply 'R-rah, R-rah', KBOX 'The Box' and KNUS 'Canoe'. For brevity's sake partial call letters were sometimes used in conversation. 'JZ' for KFJZ, 'FAA' for WFAA, "B-A-P for WBAP, etc.. It was a quick way to refer to the competition without actually having to say their call letters.
