K-Love Adds Third South Bay Signal With KBAY Purchase

So the expectation is Klove moving to 94.5 and Radio Nueva Vida taking on 95.3fm. Makes the most sense I would not think that Radio Nueva vida would get the new signal for EMF like in Yuma where KLove ended up on the weaker 100.9fm. KLVS shares a lot of coverage with the current KBAY so that might change things different due to that.

I feel like KBAY will move to 102.9 and replace KBLX since they don’t have great ratings right now, plus KBLX already has boosters to cover the East Bay which would also eliminate the need for 92.1 to be a simulcast of KBAY, maybe giving them an opportunity to launch a new station on that freq or simulcast KUIC/KKIQ

And here we go! Let the speculation proceed...

Bay Country has a lot more listeners in the South Bay where KUFX has a stronger signal. So I see KBAY moving to 98.5, and KUFX moving to 102.9. I believe Country has priority over Classic Rock for it's growing popularity, and maybe stronger revenue (?).

With KBLX being sacrificed.

K-Love will be moving in to 2nd and 3rd signals in many areas. They are the only ones with deep pockets right now outside of a few other religious groups. This is what I said would happen 2-3 years ago. Total and complete dominance in many markets with non comms, religious, and other formats not mainstream or appealing to most. It's a major reason why radio is on an even faster death spiral.

How about KEZR? Is it really needed given the fact Connoisseur now owns KOIT and KMVQ?

I could see KBAY moving to 106.5. The idea of a relocation to 102.9 also makes some logical sense. I would be surprised to see KUFX killed, though. That station earns seemingly respectable numbers in the overall San Francisco MSA. There have been time where it's even rivaled KSAN.

Numbers yes. But revenue no.

The Connoisseur purchase of Bonneville San Francisco included the 2024 BIA revenue report for the San Francisco market (which KBAY and KEZR were not part of but the other four signals were included). KUFX billed only $1.6 million, while KBLX billed $3.5 million (but the signal differences could balance those two out). Additionally each station's closest competitor were also among the lowest billing stations in the market with Cumulus' 107.7 KSAN billing $2.7 million and Audacy's 102.1 KRBQ at just $1.8 million.

It gets more ridiculous every day.
Not really rediculous. The seller gets rid of a marginal signal, and at the same time removes a station from the fragmented arena of declining radio revenue.

From my view, those revenue numbers really show the writing on the wall for the future of terrestrial radio. Also, looking at the demographics in the area where 102.9 is strongest, I can’t see country or classic rock as a sensible option.

In my view it says more about the San Francisco market than it does radio in general. San Francisco is the center of the tech industry. I believe radio listenership is low in the area for that reason. I also believe that's a big part of why Bonneville sold its very successful cluster. There isn't much money for traditional media in the home of big tech.

I was just talking to a friend about that very thing. Radio is falling in the Bay Area faster than anywhere else. I remember looking at the SF Chronicle newspaper 15-20 years ago and noticed it was a shell of its former self even then.

I remember the pink section in the SF Chronicle on Sundays where it had radio dial listings I think 2nd or 3rd page before the back page. I could be wrong about that...

And those revenue numbers are from 2024. Just imagine how 2026 will end up being...oof.

After reading Lance's post, I'm now leaning towards KUFX being sacrificed, and KBLX staying put on 102.9. There's Classic Rock already with KSAN, and the Urban AC is obviously doing better in revenue than other Connoisseur stations.
