K-Love Asks For Shutdown of Pirate Station

Guys, you are all so close to radio, FCC rules, transmitter power etc., that you are losing sight of the actual legal situation here.

Operating an unlicensed broadcasting station is a felony in New Jersey, as well as against FCC regulations. It may also be an illegal business for a variety of other federal, state and local reasons, not the least of which is probably not paying taxes.

It is reasonable to expect that there are illegal aliens involved. So there are probably immigration violations.

The FCC, other federal authorities, and local law enforcement have an obligation to enforce the law, or FCC regulations and arrest law breakers.

These radio pirates are by definition in NJ, felons. If convicted they face up to 18-months in prison, and a $10,000 fine.

Licensed contour lines, prices paid for licenses, how long the license existed etc. are all irrelevant. The Westchester station would otherwise be heard in certain areas, and this criminal operation is blocking the legal signal.

This station is being damaged by these lawbreakers, and the federal and local authorities have an obligation to stop the criminals.

Here is what I wrote in a similar thread on the NJ board of this website:

"This situation may be the FCC's "Pirate Perp Walk" opportunity. Let's hope they have the good sense NOT to waste it.

It's a chance to get other federal agencies, like Immigration, and local law enforcement in on the act. It's an opportunity to get the media to focus attention on these Jamaican illegals.

I can see the TV news reports now as "officers" raid the studios of these illegal, and possibly foreign, broadcasters who are interfering with a licensed "Christian" radio station.

It's time for the FCC to hit a pirate with everything it's got in its arsenal, and set an example.

The heat is on this time. With lawyers for the damaged station owners not likely to take anything but complete elimination of pirate signals on the frequency as an adequate solution. This will be true even if the bad guys are broadcasting from outside the licensed station's protected contours which relate only to other licensed stations. It could be easily proved that these illegals are denying the station potential listeners it might otherwise have. That is damage.

If the pirates aren't made to disappear, the licensed station would have grounds to sue the FCC for malfeasance, or NOT doing its job of regulating the airwaves, and damages could be very substantial in a case like this.

The FCC bureaucrats can't let that happen, because heads will roll at the federal agency if it does. "

That guy is not going to get off that frequency if they pay him! He's been there for years.
Google jamminzradio
The FCC wont go into these neighborhoods Exit 145 off the parkway for example.
The pirates are all over there and if they ran a million watts they wouldnt get shut down.

And EMF is no more ethical than some pirates. They apply for translator frequencies, what station are they translating? None. And their overinflated salaries of their chiefs for a non profit. EMF needs to CLEAN IT UP!

Sometimes, I find it highly ironic the FCC will occasionally nab someone operating a speck over the FM/AM Part 15 rules. Non-commercially, on a vacant frequency. Just a harmless little 'ol hobby....

But then, we see a FLAMING, full blown, balls-out, IN-YOUR-FACE pirate like THIS? On somebody else's frequency? With it's own professionally designed web site, filled with ADVERTISING and their own Facebook/Twitter pages?

"Now move on folks, nothing to see here, nothing to see. Move on......"

What kind of example is THIS setting?

And then the FCC wonders WHY there are so many pirates?

Either the FCC isn't paying enough attention to the patently obvious.

Or, that yet very real possibility SOMEONE is being bought off.......

Because I just can't see otherwise how something like this could go on for THIS long with NOBODY at the FCC doing anything about it whatsoever......

They are in compliance with the FCC rules.

They have two national networks and an enormous infrastructure. Good management for that large an organization is not inexpensive. They compensate fairly, even a little below industry norms.

We can all call 911 and report a "felony in progress" at the location of the pirate station whenever the pirate is broadcasting, which seems to be 24/7. We have a general area of the transmitter, so it shouldn't be too hard to find the exact address of the antenna if you go look for it. You can't get in trouble for a false 911 call since the pirate station is a felony in progress. A felony is a felony whether it's a pirate station or a bank robbery, so the police should respond and enforce that law! If the East Orange police get enough calls, maybe they'll raid the pirate station.

I did that for the 87.9 pirate in Newark back in 2009, but nothing happened :(

I believe the previous poster stated on the NJ board that Jamminz has moved from 96.7 to 99.9.
Can anyone confirm this? If this is correct, how is reception of KLove now, in the Newark/Oranges area?

I have noticed a significant and SUDDEN improvement in the S/N ratio of K-Love here in West Haven, CT. :D Is this the 30db contour? Well, I have no way to know... but their signal IS NOT receivable on ANY radio in my home, and I cannot even get it in either my or my wife's cars, until we drive past the hill near us. Even then, the signal is very spotty, until we get into Stratford.

I wanted to listen to this station. I wanted to hear it so badly, in fact, that I bought the materials and then constructed a 5-element Yagi antenna, cut to resonance at 96.7 MHz. I spent another 10 minutes up in my hot attic, finding the optimal position and aim for the antenna. I then fastened it there.

In addition to this, I also built a Part 15 compliant (I lose it's signal more than 200' from my house) AM transmitter, which is fed by the Sony XDR-F1HD receiver. This allows me to hear K-Love on any radio in the house. My Wife and I both LOVE it! :D

With this equipment, and now the change of the pirate, K-Love comes in with a VERY listenable signal, better than 99% of the time! :D

Now, regarding this pirate. I truly consider it's moving to a different frequency to be an answer to prayer. Scoff if you want, but he moved, and my reception of the signal is NOTICEABLY and SIGNIFICANTLY improved! :D

Here is a link to a news article about the pirate:
"The pirate station that has been interfering with KLOVE's New York area station (WKLV/Port Chester) since it took over the station in May, has moved it's frequency to 99.9..." - http://hisair.net/news1.htm

There are plenty that should be shut down, but they never are if they serve someone's purpose. In due course...in due course.

The pirate would have no effect on your reception of K-Love in Connecticut. Tropo would be the only thing affecting your reception, sometimes it would be stronger, sometimes it would be weaker, sometimes a completely different 96.7 would take over.

WPHA, sometimes He takes back the airwaves from the prince and power of the air and restores peace of mind.

The pirate is still on 96.7 in the East Orange area. I just checked and it's booming in loud and clear as usual. It was off earlier today but they are always on at night. As for 99.9, that is a completely different pirate that has been on the air for many years in this area.

I'd love to see either WKLV or the 96.7 pirate do an internet stream simulcast
of the 96.7 Jelli dance station in Las Vegas....but I'm just dreamin' ::)

Ha! I'd love to see the 96.7 pirate do a simulcast of (what used to be) 96.7 Party!

Since the FCC doesn't seem to care about pirates, just get a transmitter and start a radio station!

There must have been a 99.9 pirate already on the air, so when 96.7 was off the air, we assumed that the pirate moved to 99.9. But 99.9 really was just a separate pirate station.
There really isn't any frequency for the 96.7 pirate to move to, since every open frequency is either a first adjacent to an NYC station, or co-channel with another legal or pirate station. Their "best" new frequency would be 105.7. It would wipe out WDHA and WQXR in the immediate area, but there wouldn't be any co-channel interference.

It would wipe out WDHA and WQXR in the immediate area, but there wouldn't be any co-channel interference.

Neither, Greater Media, which owns WDHA, nor WNYC, which owns WQXR, would stand for a pirate damaging their signal in North Jersey.

They would hold the FCC, and the local police department's feet to the fire to stop the pirate permanently, and would launch a PR campaign and possible lawsuit against the federal and local authorities if they didn't do their job.

These radio pirates are among the easiest criminals to track down. Once the authorities really get on their case, they will be gone. There are police SWAT teams chomping at the bit for raiding these studios. It's good practice for when they go after drug gangs. Once the right person in power makes the decision to stop them, they will wind up in jail, sent back to their native countries, and their illegally gotten gains and equipment will be confiscated.

This 96.7 situation may be the straw that breaks the camels back. The lawyers for the legal station will keep the pressure on, and the authorities have no choice but to move in with whatever it takes to stop, convict and jail these felons.
