K-Love "Local"?

Over on the NYC radio board, there has been much discussion about K-Love's upcoming entry into the market via a grandfathered class-A move-in signal purchase. In one of the posts, someone shared this webpage:

http://www.klove.com/music/radio-stations/new-york-city.aspx

This unique station splash page has a section for NYC concerts and events, but the rest of the content is relatively generic. Intrigued by this, I searched other cities to see if they also have similar splash pages, but could not find any.

My question is this - is K-Love starting to build "local" webpages for their stations? Something comparable would be the CBS radio/TV webpages now under the city name.cbslocal.com...

K-Love has a studio here in Indianapolis from which its morning show originates. Since it's a national satellite broadcast however, their on-air people must still say things like "it's 20 minutes past the hour", etc. But for Indianapolis at least, one of their most responsive markets, it does give K-Love many opportunities to have their morning-drive personalities show up at local events, making them a "local" station.

Occasionally, mainly during pledge drives, WKLU in Indy does break from the satellite network for a few hours to talk directly to potential pledge donors in the Indianapolis area while the K-Love station in nearby Madison County sticks with the satellite programming.

This was partly why EMF did this both with the Air1 and KLove morning shows.. They found that their major talent on the west coast limited travel for events.. With the morning shows on the East Coast they can get away more. Also with California being earthquake prone area... EMF has a fail-safe for their network now.. They can orginate the Network programming from there for both KLove and Air1 if the need arises and Rocklin would go off line.

What I thought K-Love was based in Napa or Santa Rosa here in California. All I know is that 89.5 fm here in Vallejo used to be K-love before it became KZCT Ozcat. and 89.9 Napa K-love and KNDL became 89.9 KDFC Classical music.

I have heard occasional local spots on WPKV-98.3, the Duquesne, Pa.-licensed station EMF leases from Keymarket for K-Love in Pittsburgh. Given the success (just under a 3 share) of FM 98.3 and the following of FM 98.5 WKEL down the road in Confluence, 98.3's signal is being increased. Whether that means more Pittsburgh presence for K-Love is anyone's guess.

K-Love has had presence here before, in the 1990s when it was on WPLW-1590 (more recently the late, lamented WZUM). It was an affiliate owned by the Hickling family that did try some local cut-ins.

Conversely, EMF is moving its Wheeling area signal and selling its FM 96.5 there to Keymarket.

There are two stop sets per hour where local announcements can be placed to give the local satellite pick-up a more local feel. It's still not the same as a local radio station, whether it be non-comm or commercial.

Of course, K-Love is now operational in NYC, on 96.7FM. They do run some promos saying "We are so glad to be here in New York!" obviously seeking to build some "buzz" among NYC area listeners. It seems to be working... but I suspect that K-Love would REALLY benefit from a LOCAL morning show here in the world's #1 radio market. :)

Folks in Cali are a little different than us East Coasters. ;)

KLove's morning show actually comes out of Indy ;) (So does their Sister Network "Air1")

So then their different dayparts come from different studios, across the US? Interesting... multiple points of failure, but I guess it's also "backup".

Just the morning shows. Air1 and KLove morning shows as of I think around last Dec started coming from Indy.. They did this so their morning show team did not have to get up at like 2am pacific time each morning to do a show..

Indy also serves as a backup in case something happens to Rocklin. Their two studios presently are Rocklin and Indy. Currently just the morning shows orginate out of Indy. They operate out of the former
studios if I remember that they inherited when they purchased 101.9 WKLU station from previous owners.

Makes sense for a station like that.

Yeah -- Any major network in CA should have back up.. No one knows when that big earth quake will hit the west coast they keep predicting "at some time"

The Indianapolis office has proved useful as Sean and Mandy made a visit to Ichthus this weekend. It's also close to a number of other major festivals in Illinois, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. What was interesting another EMF staffer actually made the trip from Phoenix to work the event.

I'm likely to agree with you about the travel for events for the morning crew, not to mention they had to get up real early on the West Coast to do the morning drive for the East Coast.

Not meaning much, but Rocklin is not really in the earthquake belt; I live close by, but that isn't to say it couldn't happen. In fact, I suppose if "The Big One" hit San Francisco, it probably would affect the Sacramento area in some ways.

According to a documentary I watched recently, that big earthquake is 200 yrs overdue.

A bit off topic but how interesting is it that the NYC area had an earthquake last week.
