I hope this station remains a guy broadcasting an ipod from a treehouse in Covinton. No corporate station could be this good!

Ummmm....it IS a corporate station. Just not corporately programmed, no program directors, no hotshot consultants, no commercials, no traffic and weather together, nothing, not even human beings to muck up the sheer aural joy of a 25,000 watt i-Pod.....

And First Broadcasting really wants to get this thing upgraded and on outta here. But they gotta get KAFE moved down a notch. And I have a feeling the final sale price (including Cougar upgrade) and everything else is going to be BIG,

I am just enjoying it as long as it lasts. Every once in a while there is a string of 80s tunes. They could drop those but for the most part it is an enjoyable station.

I like alot of 80's music, however, there is enough stations arlready playing it. I think they should concentrate more on filling the old KBSG void. 50's, 60's, and 70's. It really surprises me that KJR hasn't taken advantage of the loss of KBSG. Why is KJR playing so much 80's when Jack already does that? KJR should focus more on the 70's, and even the 60's. Jack kinda focuses on 80's and 90's, though they throw in some 70's and 00's, and occasionally something from the 60's, ie. the Beatles, Stones, Who, or Kinks. But what do I know? I don't know a dam thing about radio eh!

Apparently not.

Ok Bill, now that you have said that what would you do with it if it was up to you to program the station?

I'm enjoying this place holder staion, too. Sure, in a better world there would be live dj's and maybe even an enjoyable commercial or two, but it's better than most of the other stations on the dial locally. I'd even be willing to go up to the mountain and re-program the ipod once a week or so.

Jack should have done alot better than it is right now. Their "Playing What We Want" format gives them LOTS of room to make adjustments to their playlist to keep the station fresh. If ratings start to fall, start adjusting the music! Even throw some country or hip-hop selections into the mix. You'd have a station that doesn't target one specific group, but everyone. Wasn't that what the station should have been about in the first place?

San Diego's Jack-FM did some adjustments to their format after ratings started to fall there. They dropped alot of the post-2000 music and started playing alot of late 70s, 80s, and early 90s music.

I don't defend everything Jack does. But I do find it maybe the most listenable station around here, as far as playing most of the music I like. The station probably would be more successful if their playlist wasn't hindered by people like AQH and Radioguru who program to the least common denominator. And NO, I don't think they should drop the 2000's music. That is music that needs to be played. I think they can pretty much follow their current format but they need to be creative and throw in some deeper cuts, or at least more songs that used to be hits that don't get played anymore.

I'm not clear if the rest of us are allowed to comment in this thread or not...but just in case:

JACK is kind of the epitome of radio smashed into one station:
1. Originates with someone who hates what's on the dial and creates a new format that's fun to hear.
2. It gets a following and becomes successful, attracting attention.
3. Other people like the success and copy the format, but change it.
4. Consultants and chain programmers get involved and remove all the elements that gave birth and made it interersting in the first place.
5. Station tanks.
6. Someone else starts over at #1.

When JACK came to the states and it became a no-jock, tighter-rotation format it immediately missed the point of what made the format interesting. It started as anti-niche and quickly got shoved into a niche.

That is the million dollar question Mack. Why is KJR FM doing what they're doing? That bone head needs to be fired.

Super! So how would you pay for all that with no ratings?

Rock, I think that you, Mack, Bong, Grind, Lonely, and some others on this board should all get out your checkbooks and collectively make something like that happen. I believe that once you experienced the cost and results of trying to operate a radio station by "fun" alone, you would be singing a different tune while living in a cardboard box in Post Alley.

That just might work! I think that's part of what's lost in radio these days is fun! Everybody is too tensed up, trying to make sure they play The Logical Song or Don't let the sun go down on me 10 times a day!

Look at the big picture here. If your radio station is 'fun, compelling and entertaining' you'll garner ratings. Especially when that talent pool in the market is getting smaller and smaller.

and to be honest, the highest billing FM in my market has almost the lowest ratings of all the other FM's. Figure THAT one out! (obviously I am NOT in Seattle)

Okay then let's look at your "big picture".

So other than hiring some talent that didn't last for various reasons, how would you program say..a rock station to make it "fun and entertaining"? And what sort of ratings would you expect with the formula? Qume? TSL? What sort of rock, Active, Classic, Oldies?
Would you do research to make sure it remains "fun", or would you program the station based on your tastes exclusively? What sort of talent budget would you have? Operating expenses? Ad price per share you would command? Would you put talent under contract? And if so, would there be "out clauses" based on rating performance?
