K-Rock needs to Drop the OSR (Old School Rock)

Good news: I think K-Rock might finally be getting it. Playlist is widening, Nu-Metal disappearing.

Bad news: K-Rock still thinks its cool to Black Sabbath if they label it as OSR before playing. makes me want to change the station.

How about Pink Floyd? AC/DC? Tom Petty? Guns N' Roses? Led Zeppelin? All of them old, tired corporate rock warhorses? Like we don't have ANY other stations in NYC or on the outskirts that play them constantly (actually, we have one in-market, two rimshots - and that's plenty, thank you). Seriously, give me Korn, Slipknot or Disturbed any day over this. At least no one else is playing them in the area.

How about the way they have their favorite artists and play them constantly? Red Hot Chili Peppers have 3 (count 'em, THREE) songs from their nearly 2 year old Stadium Arcadium album in the Top Ten at K-Rock. Linkin Park has 3 songs in the Top 20. Foo Fighters have 3 songs in the Top 30 (That means that nearly one-third of the Top 30 consists of songs by THREE BANDS!). Green Day has 7 songs in the Top 100. If it seems like they're playing the same artists over and over again, it's because they are.

Ratings in the 1s should send CBS a message loud and clear: The status quo is not going to work. Put some effort into programming this station instead of just playing the same old songs that have been on for years along with a few new tracks. I don't think I've heard a more boring rock station in my life. Free FM, we hardly knew ye!

drop old school rock and add old school punk;
PISTOLS,DOLLS,RAMONES,ELECTRIC CHAIRS,STOOGES,,,
the kids today are wearing all those shirts anyway from Hot Topic and have a greater interest in the first wave of punk than the old tired rock standards

I honestly don't think any of you are actually listening to the station.

It's really not that bad. If they had some marketing, I bet they could generate a buzz. They are playing currents and everything.

I heard no Pink Floyd, Tom Petty, Guns and Roses, or Led Zepplin. In my 3-4 hours of listening this weekend. They did play Sabbath Twice and AC/DC once. But they also played the Violent Femmes twice, without branding it OSR. I agree its good to play classics, and I think K-Rock is onto something playing the Violent Femmes. I'd love to hear them add the English Beat or some other essential New Wave band. I'd soooo much rather hear fresh classic New Wave than tired classic rock. I can't count count how many times I've heard the same new Order songs at the Alligator Lounge on Metropolitan Ave....Hipsters (excluding myself) seem to love New Order.

I'd get a kick if they'd take a morning/afternoon slot on Saturday and hit strictly on the playlist from the former 92.7WLIR. If you're gonna go retro, then at least hit on the stuff that hasn't been played in the area for quite sometime. OSR is already too easy to find around the dial. Just a thought.

This is exactly what K-Rock did back in Stern's final days, only it was under "Retro Rock". Same gimmick, different name.

Basically it comes down to this....

The Consultant says "Jump"

The Local Programmer has to implement the "JUMP"

what "JUMP" should I use?(asks the PD)

The Consultant says...our research shows you should "JUMP" this way....

more potential listeners prefer this "JUMP" and we believe the Tune Out Factor will

not be as great if we "JUMP" this way.

The P.D. says I'm going to "JUMP" the way I want to,the heck with it!

Next Day the Regional P.D. gets a call from the Consultant in L.A. who says

your P.D. isn't JUMPING the way I told him to.

The Next day the P.D> is JUMPING over to the Unemployment Line

and the Regional P.D. is Acting PD as putting the CONSULTANTS Orders

in effect.

BOO to K-Rock and rock radio today in general...

Just bring back WNEW from 1977....

now THAT was a STATION!!!!!

The ghost of Scott Muni needs to take over the studios of K-Rock during a wussed out Linkin Park "song", and play "Dogs" from Pink Floyd. Then after that , Muni's ghost should play all 40 minutes of "Thick As A Brick"....

that would be GREAT!!!!!!!

1) NYC Rock radio is not going to play Iggie & The Stooges or act like it's 1977 again. GET OVER IT.

2) RHCP has no business having the 3 top 10's in the playlist. Those songs are almost 2 years old.

3) I'm liking the addition of more currents but they need at least 25-30 a week. And teetering the line between Alternative/Active is what killed them in the first place. Pick a side and stay on it. People who like Fall Out Boy don't want to hear Disturbed and vice versa.

4) No OSR is necessary. We have a classic rock station.

5) Add currents when they come out. Don't wait for them to break into the alternative top 10 before you play them. It's NYC, be the first, not the last.

No way dude, NYC Rock Radio NEEDS to play Iggie & The Stooges. I think that is a BRILLIANT idea. Matter of fact, how about a GREAT format called "NYC 1977" that only plays old punk and prog rock. Even better, have the station play some wussed out Korn or Linkin Park "song" and have it be interrupted by REAL rock, such as Pink Floyd or Iggie....

1977 was a GREAT year for rock and should be respected.....

BOO to rock radio of today and to people that hate the 70's!!!!!!!

LONG LIVE WNEW & SCOTT MUNI!!!!!!!!

Somebody needs to get up there and interrupt that HORRID group Systems Of A Down with a complete presentation of "Tales From Topographic Oceans".......

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

NY rock radio didn't play the stuff in 77, it played wimp o rama stuff from Boston and Flettwood Mac, part of the reason that current rock is residing in the well deserved toilet that it finds itself;
Vive Le Sex Pistols! Bring On The New York Dolls!!!!!

Completely on point....

My one questions, how many times can consultants be wrong before their services are no longer needed?

If your wish comes true for 92.3, then 95.5 is going to flip to country.

Great question. One thing I'm also curious about is this whole "Fresh Meat" thing. How about adding the songs you hype every week to the normal playlist? Or will that only allow you to play RHCP 10 times a day, instead of 15.

K-Rock is playing Billy Idol under the guise of "OSR." While my feelings about Billy Idol are mixed, I wholeheatedly feel Billy Idol belongs on an alt station much more than Black Sabbath or AC/DC. Now if only they'd play the Pixies...

my thoughts:
yes I am very sick of the same OSR songs as well as being able to guess whats next..
I have several suggestions for k-rock in other posts.
here is a new one:
I would love K-rock to Kick Eddie Trunks Ass with some dj and a heavy metal show with no talk. I talk to my dads coworkers who are in their 40's and 50's listening to k-rock and asked what their thoughs were on Eddie Truck and they all think that he talks way too damn much. I can't imagine what would happen if k-rock threw on a competing show...

Metal sucks...its for people way out of k-Rocks target demo.

On the plus side, WXRK is playing "Sheena is a Punk Rocker" under the guise of OSR.
