K-Rock to go away?

I hear rumors there was a mass layoff at Great Eastern's Keene cluster recently. WKKN will become a simulcast of WXXK...like that area needs another Country signal.
Can anyone confirm or deny?

Maybe this means they're now going to go through with the construction permit and move away from Keene to the 96.3 site. Right now they're at the WKNE/WEKW site.

I'd imagine that those who work at K Rock must've seen this coming.

WWWWWWWOOOOOOOOOWWWWZZZZZAAAA!!!!!

Well my lil milker down on the farm in the metropolis of Putney said a man who, according to her, "looked like he sells vacuums but actually sells radio says that K-Crap is actually going to just be a simulcast of Q106 once the mighty Nassau empire finally walks away so they can focus on their court proceedings"!!

So will it be a simulcast of Q106 to make it the BIG HEFFER in New England??

Will Kixx finally get a simulcast since its the country station with the smallest coverage area out of the UV stations? (My hens would love some more Dierks!!!)

Or maybe we get flung from the coop and WTPL gets more coverage area in this political season??

WWWWWWWOOOOOOWWWWWW!!!! This is going to be "MOO-TIFUL"!!!!!

Makes sense...why would you have two rock stations that you own (K-Rock and soon to be Q106) go at it in Keene. Like someone mentioned earlier...increase that potential audience with Kixx having a signal in Keene.

well this completely sucks. I can tell you working at Okemo, its either satellite radio or q-106. I just wish we could keep the local scene alive. I used to just here 99 rock or essentially 101.7 which was a stronger signal (now 101.9) back in the day. These days, lifty's without a radio will just have ipods on. very sad. I just want to hear Godsmack, volbeat and Five Finger Death Punch blasting in the terrain park on my day's off at WXCI but unless there is a promo department pushing to have a station on at a ski area Ie sell radio's where possible. I also want to mention I wish Z97 would bring back throw back songs on a lot more like they used to. I will actually listen to radio again. from word of mouth, many have been mad that this is gone who listen to top 40. To me radio around Ludlow VT is dead sadly. Ok my rant is done now back to listening to spotify, and my ipod so I can hear some volbeat and Nightwish.

What a "KROCK" of an article...I'm friends with someone who used to do sales with WKKN last year and here are the FACTS...

The station was BARELY surviving financially...

The "rock format" they were delivering wasn't being accepted by advertisers AT ALL...especially when you try to be raunchy in the morning...

Management (i.e. the General Manager and the Program Director) there were atrocious. Come on...the station was actually SUCCEEDING with Greg & The Morning Buzz and then decided that LOCAL was better and it did WORSE! In turn, we got two local guys who couldn't put on an entertaining program for the life of them.

Oh yeah...the "rock" music was ALL over the place...enough said...

Honestly, I give credit (and it was a detriment as well) that Great Eastern gave K-Rock almost 5 years to get their acts together. If it was CC or Saga, they would've flipped formats after two years. The staff there was given a chance...and they couldn't run with it.

Country is a safe format...and if they are trying to build the cumes of KIXX this was the way to go especially in the Southern part of the market.

Keene already has two country stations, bird fed WYRY - Hinsday and WINQ - Winchester. I don't see why Shapiro would want to go head to head against Saga's WINQ.

Because the simulcast costs nothing besides the electric bill, xmtr maintenance, music fees. etc. Since there are 2 signals he could sell them separately or even get a higher rate for both. WYRY isn't much of a competitor but WINQ is a well run station with a good airstaff. I wouldn't want to go head to head against them.

Creeper993,

I wanted to personally respond to your post because it seems like your 'facts' are way off. If your "friend" is the source, more then likely they are a disgruntled employee that isn't giving you the whole story. Because I am the only person that was with K-Rock from beginning to end I think I'm more qualified to educate you on the facts of the inner goings-on at the station.

K-Rock was my baby...I built it from scratch. I will agree with you that Jeff Shapiro and Courtney Galuzzo from Great Eastern Radio did give the station 5 years to become more profitable and they really believed in the staff and the station. It is unfortunate that the station never was able to be where we needed it to be....despite multiple different directions.

You say that I and Clif McNaughton (the GM for most of the time) were "atrocious" at our jobs. Keep in mind we both have approx 20+ years in the business in multiple markets. I also worked for Monadnock Radio Group as well...and we all know, they only hire the best. I come from a broadcast family...my mother and grandmother were in the business. I've always been around radio. If you really think that Clif and I sat in my office and said "Hey, we are succeeding.....lets get rid of the #1 Morning Show in NH - Greg and the Buzz and start something local"...then you really are not giving us much credit. We always worked on trying to give the client the best value we could.

The truth is that despite our best efforts we couldn't get the sales where they needed to be with the staff we could use. Regardless if we were live in the morning....with "The Buzz"....with anything.

Also, Monadnock Radio Group is a well oiled machine....with years of local relationships. We had a much smaller and much less seasoned staff and local advertisers had their budgets set in stone....especially at first. We had to spend a few years proving ourselves in the market.

Saga added even more signals with their HD sub-channels on translators.....with some deals at "a dolla' - a holla". Their package deals arrived in front of the clients faster then we could reach them. We had our own clients that worked with us exclusively as well....so we did 'break into' the market from that sales side...and put a small dent into the Saga armor.

From well known local restaurant owners, to surgeons, blue collar workers, and even a priest.....we would get great comments on our shows.

Take a look at this article from the Keene Sentinel:

For those who didn't click....let me highlight:

==========
Food drive nets 15,000 pounds
K-ROCK Radio and The Fenton Family Dealerships recently teamed up with Market Basket of Keene for the second annual “Stuff-A-Truck” Food Campaign. From Nov. 17-23, the staff members worked from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. to collect food donations from customers at the store. Brick House Tile donated the truck, which then delivered more than 15,000 pounds of food to The Community Kitchen.
==========

This event was a YEARLY event. The first one with just Topher Ceiligh and myself broadcasting in the cold from 7A-7P each day. The 2nd year more staff participation.

Personally, I'm very proud of some of the content that Topher Celigh and myself (as Parker Springfield) were able to put together. So, much so that I wanted to keep some of the old archives alive through a tribute page here: http://www.parkerandtopher.com

Was it "raunchy" as you say....hardly. Edgy.... certainly....but it is Active Rock radio. It was 'different' then anything Keene had in the past. We event had interesting and topical guests on the show. Ozzy, Nikki Sixx, Octomom, etc....I guess not entertaining enough for you.

You're comment on the music being "ALL over the place"....I closely monitored stations like WHEB, WGIR, and especially WMMR in Philadelphia which in 2010, was honored by the National Association of Broadcasters with the Marconi award for Rock Station of the Year. So apparently, these stations had their music wrong as well.

I did get comments like...."you need more new stuff" but then the next day I'd get a comment that said "you need more old stuff"...so I felt I had the perfect balance of what we wanted to sound like.

With struggling sales.....sales executive turnover....and Great Eastern acquiring Q106 (my Alma-mater) as stated earlier in the thread....why would they want two rock station competing with each other? With the KIXX simulcast Great Eastern can over a great area with country and rock. KIXX is now....almost just as big as Q106! Great Eastern made the right move and I totally understand why they did it.

I wish them great luck!

Justin Tyler from KIXX is an excellent programmer and Elise Valentine is fantastic and very adaptable.

Great Eastern also offered me a position in Lebanon which I could not take. So, no....it wasn't a "mass layoff" either. It was my choice to stop my broadcasting career. Jeff and Court tried to make the change so that it wouldn't effect any of the full-time staff. I respect them greatly for that.

I will not get into any other reasons why I personally feel that K-Rock wasn't financially successful...as I do have other thought....but I have great pride in what the station was.

Currently, I am out of the broadcasting business for now. If Keene wants an active rock station in the market badly enough....it may happen again...in the meantime....they have Q106 which only can get better and return back to it's former glory that I have fond memories of!

If anyone wants to challenge my *true* "FACTS" please do so....I'll answer them the best I can!

Whoops, sorry NHRadio, I meant to say Radiogaga. I think that was the username that was used. Didn't mean to throw you under the bus. Haven't had my morning coffee yet.

Is Kixx on 101.9 even still targeting Keene though? Does anyone know if they've moved from the WEKW/WKNE tower to the WFYX/WOOL-LP tower yet? From there, looking at the coverage map, they will no longer be a factor in Keene.

But Shapiro could do the same thing by simulcasting Q106 on 100.9 with less potential competition.

Interesting reply. I'm not familiar with the market, so I have no axe to grind or side to take, but I do appreciate the daily struggle of trying to get a new station off the ground. Also find it interesting that your (I assume) air name utilizes 2 firearms companies. Parker (shotguns) and Springfield (pistols and rifles).

Scott, I have to say great reply.
Even the college scene has its ways now. I had to cease broadcasting my radio show because I could not renew my contract ie, politely put college students think Active Rock/Hair metal sucks. Because of this, sadly I have left the fm dial. Its upsetting that after commuting 100's of miles from Okemo to NYC tri-state just to do my radio show and 1'000's of hours of volunteer time I was shown the door. I feel like there in no "loyalty" anymore in radio. Chris at 99 rock how does he get to stay on there? I feel like he puts in 100 hours a week Does he own 99 rock? I have been listening up in St. Johnsbury VT thankfully the 99.3 translator in St.J owned by I believe Nassau is off.

Jamie said:

Never was, Jamie. Never has been. Never will be.

Does he own 99 rock?
IIRC, WFRD is owned by Dartmouth College but has a commercial license. At one time they used another broadcasting company to sell ads under a JSA.
I don't know if that agreement still exists.

I will say this although, K-rock is gone, Congrats to Jim B. he is the new morning show on the KiX on 101.9 I know him from meeting him next to his residence in CT. He probably remembers my "OZ" license plate well Long story ;D ;)
