K101? You gotta be kidding!

I have to laugh at the CC geniuses who came up with this one.

I was listening to one of their talk stations and during the traffic reports heard them refer to the 101 freeway as the "K101 freeway" - and it wasn't even on K101 - oh excuse me, STAR -

So I flipped around the dial and a few other CC stations were doing it too.

What gives? Is STAR going back to K101? And why are they selling K101 on their other stations?

This has to be the strangest or dumbest idea in a while.

...Or is it? K101 as an identifier can still be considered in the "legacy" category, as much as KFRC, KNBR, KSFO (although diluted) and KABL (ditto, but for a different reason).

If they are doing this as a pseudo-stunt, or as a preliminary to making a change, then it's pretty clever. Perhaps they're hoping that they'll get people talking about it.

And if that's the case, look no farther than right here.

By the way, Buddha, which stations have you heard this on? Does CC do their own in-house traffic reports, or are they using Metro or another outside source?

Clear Channel does their own traffic in-house.

If you heard the "K101" mention on multiple stations in the cluster around the same time - say within fifteen minutes of each other - you just heard the same report replayed several times. The traffic person records one generic report once every 15 minutes or so (notice there's no interaction between the jock and the reporter and no mention of which station the report is on by the traffic reporter) and it's played on several stations in the cluster, hopefully in a timely manner.

So, as much as I'd like to give them credit for a good idea or a clever stunt, my guess is that the traffic person goofed - or was goofing around - and that one report got on several stations before anything got done about it.

I've noticed that the Metro reporters will sometimes use their wrong name (for some reason, they use different names on KGO), and I've heard Joe McConnell forget that he was supposed to be "Joe Vincent" on KGO. Just human error. Maybe the guy reporting on Star just slipped back into an old habit.

Clear Channel Does do traffic in-house...However, they do not record reports for any of their San Francisco stations...all reports are LIVE...Some minor recording is done for San Jose stations...

Pays to know what you're talking about...The only goof up here was your post...

No gaffe - it's been happening for several days now - by different reporters on different stations all calling it the K101 freeway

101.3 is actually about to become, "Ralph-FM, We Play Anything That Makes You Puke."

CC is not known for respecting or even taking advantage of "legacy". If they were to buy KFRC they'd call it "KOOL".
