Today, listeners to KGTK and KITZ are enjoying this loop message intermixed with local spots:

"This is Westwood One, SES 11, transponder 17. For receiver authorizations please contact Westwood One, Denver Operations Center, at 720-873-5177 between the hours of 8 AM and 10 PM Eastern Time."

I assume that's a 1000 hertz tone added for effect...

Oops, they obviously put in a new XDS receiever or picked up a new program and forgot to authorize it

There are several other Puget Sound AMers in poor states, with frequent outages or just sending dead audio. KITZ itself is on a lowpower STA lifeline for power since the loss of their tower site.

Not sure I would put the blame on Westwood one. They are very responsive and helpful. If there is an issue with the XDS receiver, it's up to the station staff to manage the XDS settings and communicate with Westwood One. It's also up to the station staff to put in place temporary programming if there is an issue with the XDS.

Thats exactly what this is.. a satellite reciever issue on the stations end.

Had that happen one day when i was working at a station that carried paul harvey in 2008... we put in a new reciever and oops.. forgot to authorize it and get the test channel when we went to the feed

Even better, maybe they should go away? According to Busto's filing with the Commission that Bill posted, the Northwest Rock and Roll Preservation Society hasn't existed in a while, and they're using a translator connected with an AM station, to carry programming from Brian's LPFM. Definitely a no-no. Add in the fact that there appears to have been an unauthorized transfer of control, and you have the bad day trifecta.
 
The FCC today dismissed NWR&RPS's application to move K281CI (Tacoma - 60 watts ERP) from 104.1 to 92.9. If I read the LPFM Window docs correctly, this translator will be stuck on 104.1 until after the LPFM Window has closed.

The now-dismissed paperwork had stated that K281CI was getting the KGHO-LP feed via another translator (K266BM) which we know carries KBRD instead. Those NWR&R folks will probably have to file another chunk of paperwork to clarify the signal feed of 104.1.

Of course, the paperwork would be filed right after that $20,000 fine is paid in full.

The good news is that any PSC paperwork should not be impacted by the LPFM Window imposed freeze.
 
I had to put a laughing like on that last comment. Brian Spencer deserves what he gets, I guess! We have LPFMs in the Seattle metro that are run so much better than this operation...and it's too bad, since KGHO-LP did have a good variety of music.

Once again, Bill W at Jodesha is probably thinking "I told you so".

re Westwood One tone loop: I wouldn't be surprised to see KGTK and KITZ's licenses turned in to the FCC before the start of 2025. They have very little listenership compared to other AMs. Isn't KARR-1460 still running a few watts from some longwire? Another one that will be null and void before you know it.
I see at least half a dozen AMs going silent in Seattle as the decade progresses. The ones at risk, in my opinion, are 920 and 1400, 1560 KZIZ (which is already silent on STA, IIRC), 1330 (they can just move KGRG-1 online), and sadly, possibly the Z-Twins stations. KYIZ missed the translator train big-time. I would have MUCH preferred KYIZ and their Urban AC format in stereo...KBMS was able to do it for Portland, but not 1620.

Over here in Yakima, KUTI-1460 ESPN has been silent for nearly two weeks. I assume they are on some type of STA. No translator for them either.

But those 'barker channel' tones aren't just in error on small stations - I've heard them on bigger stations as well. One Sunday morning years ago, I caught KGA-1510 with the CBS Radio Networks loop and tone. Another time I had WDAY-970 Fargo on a KiwiSDR in Alberta running non-stop smooth jazz music...turns out it was the Premiere Networks' "Test Channel". I have about 45 minutes of the music recorded off their webstream from later that night.
