K235CB 94.9

What is 94.9 broadcasting now? It would appear that KOAI 95.1 The Wow Factor has lost their translator. Correct?
Anyone know why? How important was 94.9 to KOAI?

KOAI is COL Sun City West AZ. That should tell you something about the demographics.

If it doesn't, here's a bonus clue:

The KOAI transmitter is far to the north, in Prescott National Forest, and while it covers the COL fine from there, its protected contour covers less than half of the Phoenix metro:

I marked the COL on the contour map with an "X":

It is not surprising that Sebastian's format plays well on that signal ... the demos match perfectly.

Now look at the 94.9 translator:

Definitely not a loss of "Wow Factor" listeners. In fact, I wonder why they're doing this at all with so little of the Metro covered.

That Map is not entirely accurate. I was listening listening to 95.1 on the Loop 202 from 44th Street to Dobson Rd yesterday. The signal does get kind of weak around Papago Mountain in the Tempe area, but it comes in pretty well the Arcadia and South Scottsdale area which are outside of that Contour.

Don't forget in-vehicle listening has usually better reception than listening at home.

Also, signal contour maps are the protected contour. In the absence of interference or other limiting factors, it is not uncommon for a station to be received outside the protected contour.

The map is accurate. Your presumption of what it actually indicates is not.

It depends on where you are. Here in NE Mesa, even at lower elevations than mine (1500 ft ASL at my house), both 95.1 and 94.9 come in perfectly, even in my stucco-encrusted abode. I've been able to hear both in other (lower-elevation) parts of the metro as well. 95.1 doesn't start fading away until I get to Gilbert, and even then, it's in and out depending on what part of town I'm in. This is in my van, of course, not indoors.

BTW, there are lots of members of the Geezer-American Community in east Mesa. Whether they listen to 95.1, I have no idea, but the station is audible for those who want to listen.

I think KOAI is actually transmitting from an Auxiliary site on White Tanks mountain on the west side of the Metro now. Not from Towers Mountain near Crown King anymore
