K25FW (D/FW-HSN) 25-1 ON

As JHBrandt might characterize it, the spam count in the Dallas-Ft. Worth DTV world has increased by one.

K25FW is now on 25-1 with a VERY robust signal up here in Frisco. I'll check it on the Sencore later to see the power level and MER. I'm rather surprised it made it before the weather warms up.

And, by the way, KATA-CD has been off for about 18 hours. I'm pretty sure there's no relationship to K25FW lighting up and the light being on on 50-1 since they're on different towers. KATA is on Milton and K25FW is on Cowboy.

Our brains are on the same wavelength... I posted on AVS and was headed here to say the same thing!

25.1 has a strong signal here in 75006 and I too noticed KATA-CD out since last night.

If we're on the same wavelength, all I can say is that a mind is a terrible thing to waste. :) I ain't real smrat.

Anyway, I has to reconfigure the Sencore to get measurements. K25FW comes in here with a power at -2.2 dBVm and an MER of 34.9. That compares favorably with KJJM, my strongest LP here which reads -2.7 dBVm with an MER of > 36.

I noticed the analog station was off the air this morning. I did a re-scan but didn't get a signal. They must have signed on sometime this afternoon.

Yep. For some reason the signal strength is terrible here! Keeps breaking up and dropping out. But KODF, just a couple of channels over at RF 27, is just fine, and K31GL blows it away at 1/2 the power.

It's not their antenna height either: K25FW's is 70 meters higher than KODF's (according to the FCC's HAAT calculation).

For the record, analog reception was quite bad too. This may be one of those situations where the signal arrives via two paths that happen to interfere destructively at the location of my antenna at that frequency.

RF is hoodoo and voodoo.

That being said, a tool like a Sencore takes some of the mystery out of this. In particular, the spectrum analyzer shows the raw power of the signal and the waveform. For DTV, the ideal waveform looks like a square wave. Moving the antenna just inches in any plane can greatly alter the shape of the waveform, while keeping the raw power nearly constant.

For instance, the really hot signal of KMPX on RF-30 at my location can be readily mangled by moving the antenna so that multipath occurs. The nice square wave then gets a deep notch in the middle while the power level remains high. As I understand, the metering on consumer television is some combination of raw power and signal quality. Being able to see more parameter values (power, MER and BER) plus the visual image of the waveform makes antenna adjustment less of a guessing affair.

Well, time to go and do re-scan and see if I can receive in Wise County.

I never really got it to work well. I get the best signal aiming "around the tree" and letting diffraction do the work. (That weakens VHF, for which the best signal is "through the tree," but KFWD and WFAA are plenty strong anyhow, and who cares about KZFW?!?)

But 25 is still very weak. I'm starting to wonder if their transmitting antenna is askew, so they're actually beaming far less signal in my direction than they're supposed to?

If so, it's probably been messed up for a long time. Their signal had been quite weak even on analog, but I don't remember a specific day when it suddenly went from strong to weak ???

I only get 30% on my 40 footer. It loses to K31GL, KJJM, KVFW, KLEG, and KATA! That is a not a good sign!

Here are the low power stations at my house ordered by raw power (dBVm) on the SLM-1456:

KLEG +9.1
KPFW +2.9
K25FW -0.6
KJJM -0.7
KATA -0.8
KODF -2.0
K31GL -4.5
KVFW -4.9

My last reading on KHPK/3 (before it finally was turned off for the last time was +1.1. KLEG and KPFW are only 25 miles away on Bank of America. All of the others are on either Milton or Cowboy off Belt Line in Cedar Hill.

But then again, I do live about 57 air miles NW of the farm.

Just to put a period on this sentence, the FCC has now licensed K25FW as a digital LPTV. The old analog license is gone. Don't look back!

I remember when I was a moving some friends out of a house in Carrolton
that HSN on the old Rabbit ears analog TV came in pretty good.

Up Here In McKinney the only LPTV I get is K31GL
