How is this translator doing? I know it's been relaying 1500 with Spanish News / Talk (Radio Formula). But I'm curious as to how well they're doing with the format (are they selling lots of spots and stuff)? I've heard honestly not much about it since it started two years ago, except this. http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/lo...station-tries-a-different-F-rmula-4208912.php But it's a few months old.

The station's lasted this long, so I would think it's fine now?

Financially I couldn't say, but like we've mentioned a couple of times, the translator is not operating legally. Its coverage area lies well outside the required contour of the parent station, KBRN in Boerne.

Oh okay. I can't even receive anything on 1500 here in San Antonio.

I wonder if Radio Formula's leader, Alex Hernández, knows that it's not broadcasting legally. Apparently he's still renting the box from Jerry Benavides and Claro Communications. You should contact him and let him know.

No, I don't think so. Considering some recent activity locally I figure that the FCC's people are probably hip to what's going on...and in due time they'll be the ones doing the contacting. Sorry, but the people supplying the programming should have checked things out before they signed an agreement.

I just heard K272EK and the audio is pretty bad on it. Overdriven it sounds like.

How is this station still on the air?

This station is highly illegal. It is Over powered by 10-20 times, not licensed to rebroadcast 1500 AM and is no way using the proper antenna/transmitter.

Anyone know more details on this station?

Thanks,

No idea!

Anyone know more details on this station?

I'll tell you what I do know. It's owned by Jerry Benavides's group who also owns KEDA 1540 AM and KFLZ 87.7 FM locally, as well as a couple (not yet on the air) translators and one noncommercial station. Benavides is renting out 102.3 FM to Radio Formula USA, headed by Alex Hernandez. I'm not sure of the engineering details, and I couldn't tell you if Hernandez knows this illegal activity is going on, but based on what I've been able to get on my radio/seen on these boards, yes it's very much overpowered, and not retransmitting 1500 at all. Right now 1500 is dead air, as a matter of fact. Benavides says on the K272EK license that it's supposed to be retransmitting 1540, but that is not happening. Instead 1540 is rebroadcast on the much weaker FM they have on the air, 87.7.
This station, K272EK, has been known to interfere with other stations and I'm not sure if they care all too much.

Anyone know more details on this station?

The owner is Alicia Benavides, probably related to Gerald Benavides, the owner of Claro Communications. Jerry is known to do some pretty crazy things...
K272EK, for example: The antenna 102.3 uses is in fact vastly overpowered for it's license (15 times sounds about right), and it is *not* simulcasting 1500 (which was dead air last time I was able to check it, BTW). Gerald is renting it out to Radio Formula SA, headed by Alex Hernandez. I'm not sure if Hernandez is in on the secret, but if he's not he should be made aware the station's totally illegal.

Well for what it's worth, earlier I happened to catch the K272EK translator broadcasting the signal of 1540 KEDA. It was low volume and fading in and out as if some engineering bugs were being worked out.
But as of an hour or two ago at last check, it was silent.

Testing for a flip?
