I was just informed it's playing "Tejano".

Can anyone currently in the area hear it? KLEY rebroadcast? I didn't see any news articles about the change.

It's FCC info still says KZDC.

Cool.

If you ask me adding HD to KJXK makes more sense than KTFM. KJXK is much better signal-wise from downtown.

Sure, but the KTFM facility was upgraded relatively recently and probably has much newer equipment.

And truthfully, I was there recently and 94.1 is an adequate facility. Not the best in the market but it is very decent.

They do really need to turn off the stereo though. Especially coming from out near Elmendorf. It would help with multipath and noise.

Their website confirms it.

Converting KJXK to HD would be a $250k-$300k+ project (New High Power, HD capable Transmitter, HD encoding equipment, and Xperi HD software licensing. Plus swapping out a transmitter at TOA is quite a feat of logistics with multiple subcontractors. Not to mention with current lead times it would take 6 mos to a year to complete. KTFM is already an HD facility so it was a negligible expense for Alpha to add the HD-3 to feed K277CX with something other than one of their AMs. Having an HD version of that format is nice but a very distant second to having a legal feeder for that translator. So the HD coverage really doesn’t factor into the decision. These are all business decisions, If it excites or interests us Radio Geeks that’s just a bonus for us. The stations belong to the broadcast companies and they get to decide how to play with their toys in the sandbox.

Guess the new 95.7/103.3 simulcast will stick a fork in, and possibly accelerate the demise of Tejano on KXTN 1350, which was going away in the next 15 to 18 months due to the recently announced sale. Might we see the return of TUDN on 1350 as filler?

I wouldn't be surprised if they kept "KXTN" on 107.5 HD2. Of course, it'll have to be fully automated, without any on-air personalities, and they'll have to drop the "KXTN" name (KXTN call letters are going with 1350 to the "DÑC" propaganda outlet).

On the flip side, I wonder if Alpha has approached Univision (or if they'll approach LMN after the sale closes) with interest in acquiring the intellectual property of "KXTN"? It would make sense for both parties. It was hinted that Univision only kept KXTN on AM so it wouldn't receive any blowback from the community.

So if Univision continues to program Tejano on 1350 for a year after the sale, who would “own” the intellectual property? I suppose the KXTN call would be under the control of LMN but what about the format? And if you put the KXTN call on 95.7 would it make any difference to the audience?

The call letters can be changed on 1350 by Univision, and they can give KXTN intellectual property to 95.7 and change KLEY to KXTN. That's my best idea. The audience would love it especially if they got more of KXTN's old DJs.

KXTN is seen as a legacy station. The brand has over 30 years in the market, so I'm sure it still carries weight with listeners and local business owners. Remember that San Antonio is supposed to be the capital of "Tejano", and KXTN was at the front of the Tejano scene during it's heyday.

But more importantly, a sale of the intellectual property + call letters to Alpha would wash Univision's hands from any potential fallout due to the sale. David hinted that the only reason Univision kept the station on AM was so that there wouldn't be any backlash from the community. There is zero chance LMN keeps KXTN as a Tejano station and the sale could spoil some local relationships Univision benefits from.

As far as giving your competition an advantage, I just don't see Tejano (in it's current iteration at least) competing with current Univision properties.

The KLEY call letters also hold some value themselves.

La K(LEY)? That's done. "KLEY" is only mentioned at the top of the hour anyway.
"KXTN" is the Tejano station's name.

Not in other markets. There's several "La Ley" stations scattered across the US that probably wouldn't mind taking those call letters.

The value may not be much due to PPMs making call letter branding obsolete. But the calls would definitely be sought after by opportunistic broadcasters if they're ever given up.
