This "Translator" is on the air with KAWZ Twin Falls, Id. Doesn't this interfere with KQQT? Is this another one of those that shouldn't be or is the FCC letting the religious broadcasters fight it out amongst themselves. This frequency has got to sound bad up IH 35!

KQQT in Gonzales changed their call letters to KMLR some time back. But you're right about the signal clash heading toward New Braunfels, even if it does meet the spacing requirements as shown on the application that Calvary Chapel filed. Look here and scroll to page 3: http://svartifoss2.fcc.gov/prod/cdbs/forms/prod/getattachment_exh.cgi?exhibit_id=461863

Two things are wrong here, though, in my opinion. Translators like this aren't supposed to be able to rebroadcast another station via satellite without a waiver. But here's how they got around it: they're rebroadcasting another translator, K204DX 88.7 San Antonio, which gets the Calvary programming (KAWZ) via satellite. I just don't agree with this kind of thing; I think religious translators shouldn't be allowed in the commercial FM band.

What else is wrong? Look at page one of the application. The new translator, which is broadcasting from one of the KONO (AM) towers, is located in Terrell Hills. Calvary Chapel applied for it using "Terrell Wells" as the community of license. I noticed it when the original application was filed four years ago, but apparently nobody in Idaho or the FCC caught it. So now K292FF is officially licensed to Terrell Wells, Texas. That means every one of their station ID's is illegal. Oh well...

I have to agree with 90% of what you're saying here. I certainly agree that they shouldn't be allowed to use a translator to rebroadcast a translator outside of the primary signal contour unless there are special circumstances, like an unserved area, that don't apply to San Antonio. It definitely seems a little shady what they're pulling here.

This is an easy problem to fix as it would just take a single FCC filing. However, to let it go too long is inexcusable. By the way, from looking at their signal contour, I find it tough to believe there would be a lot of problems with KMLR 106.3 around New Braunfels unless the translator is operating at too high of power or KMLR is at low power. Most translators get obliterated outside the primary signal contour. Of course, I suppose the other way to look at this is that at least it's two religious broadcasters who are slugging it out!
