KABC Radio shrinks again

KABC has fired veteran newsman Michael Linder. Bad move. He's an excellent reporter. Maybe KFI will pick him up. KABC also fired a couple of behind the scenes people, too. What are they up to? Obviously KABC is not committed to news in Los Angeles.

Interestingly, KFI radio lately has really turned into my "go to" station for news. Their live coverage of breaking local stories is excellent.

I can't remember the last time I hit the preset in my car for KNX.

Same here. KFI by far outdoes KNX in news and that's embarrassing considering KNX is a "news" station. Not only is KFI better at news but they go a lot more in depth than KNX does. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end so I'm waiting for the day when some idiot suit dweeb will figure out how much money KFI could save by jettisoning the news department.

In other threads (particularly regarding KFWB) it's been pointed out that LA isn't much of a news market. There are existing options, either KNX or KFI, as well as the NPR stations. So why duplicate what's already available? There are not that many ways of reporting the same news. The concept of full service AM radio died about 25 years ago. The trend has been towards specific format concentration. For KABC, the format is talk. Sure news is part of the topic, but the main thrust is talk.

There are ways for radio stations to get local news in LA without actually employing a news staff. Lots of locally based services that provide news and traffic for barter. So I guess the issue here isn't strictly about saving money.

But one can make the case that the story selection on a KFI will be significantly different from one on KNX... or should be... as in perhaps more coverage of the illegal immigration issue. It shouldn't all be the same news. And the local NPR station different still again. Story selection should reflect the target audience.

The journalist side of me is a bit squeamish about that idea. The news should be the news. One shouldn't allow audience to influence judgement. But you're probably right...there is a way to target news coverage.

There were several others also let go, according to Don Barrett at laradio.com.

Also of note is that KABC/KLOS GM Bob Moore was listed (voted) as the #6
best off-air LARP for 2010. Perhaps we should petition Don to bust him back
to no higher than "bubbling under." ::)

Citadel was a takeover target of a few different groups while it was in bankruptcy, but they emerged from bankruptcy sooner than anticipated. I get the troubles of an AM station in LA, but KABC is a joke. Hannity is Hannity...whatever....Levin in afternoon's is idiotic....if people driving home at the end of a work day want news/talk it probably is not some high pitched dude screaming at the top of his lungs that Obama is a liar and we are losing the arms race to North Korea because Obama is the wrost president ever. It's not even about the politics...his presentation is awful and the it is the wrong show at the wrong time of the day. The Triplets are a waste of time to even discuss. To this point Bob Moore is just wasting antennae space.
