KABC sneaks in Imus for two hours; gone before you wake!

Does anybody know or care why Imus is on for only two hours 3 to 5 am on KABC?

How the heck do you monitor ratings at that hour anyway?

Imus has been on KABC from 3-5 a.m. since one week after his start in New York. I posted on other threads, just to see how long it would take for someone to finally catch on.

First, Arbitron doesn't rate overnights.

Second, with a huge syndication push starting Jan.3, it's important to Citadel to show clearances in its top markets.

The show is, as you see, only half of what is on the air in New York, even considering a replay of the first hour (the repeat hour is not carried on RFD-TV)

I believe it to be mostly for bragging rights that Imus is "officially" in LA for syndication, but also for keeping it away from someplace "too close" to not really be able to claim "LA" as a metro station carrying the show ... such as former affiliate KCAA...at least for now.

I guess people in LA are listening elsewhere from 3-5 a.m. to have not noticed ... or cared.

Imus' topics and presentation style are of little interest to LA listeners, as has been proven before. KABC is such a sleepy station, the last thing they need is Imus.

I especially loved the quote from the station executive to the effect....

"Imus is the perfect lead-in to MacIntyre"....

Talk about putting lipstick on a pig...

I wonder how many Angelinos will be setting their alarms earlier for Imus.

I won't be one of them :(

It's crazy, but think you are right. I think they wanted bragging rights to state that Imus syndicated show is in the LA market. News has been out for a good month now this would happen. Wonder how long they will carry him there.

I'd rather hear the replay of Tilden than Imus. Not sure what KABC is doing. I am sorry but Mark Levin?? If I am going to catch Tilden's show I REFUSE to turn on the station until I know Levin is off the air. His voice, topics etc... I can't stand it. I guess other's feel that way as I was reading the KABC message wall the other day.

Now I have to turn on the radio right when Peter goes on the air.. and make sure it's turned off right when the replay hour ends and he is bookend by two of the worse hosts for the LA Market. What the??

It's nice to see something fresh, even if Imus' act isn't fresh, in wee hours for the early commuters. Maybe if he doesn't work out, Sam Philips can get her 3-5am gig back on do a dating show for 70 year olds.

I've heard first hand that KCAA could have Imus, KCAA or not, if they want to. There are other issues involved, including ABC's higher fees.

That's up to ABC Radio to decide. ABC has a syndication to build, not merely giving it away to an O&O and then charging (unlike Westwood One which didn't charge) for the program in a secondary market so close to the same metro. No reason they have to do that. A non-ABC affiliate at that.

They're not ready to do so at this time. The cost is one thing, certainly. But clearance in relatively the same market is another. Not while it's on KABC which provides more "bang for the buck" than a nearby out-of-market station with no numbers at the outset.

I'm not sure what you're saying oaktree, but KABC does not reach the IE, especially not from 3-5am. KFI dominates a large share of the market, but KABC gets basically nothing. You are correct that ABC wants $$$ for the show (although WW1 did charge most of the affiliates except KCAA and 2 or 3 near the end). I was told the price for KCTE in Kansas City, which used to carry Imus, was around $18-20k if they wanted the show back.

Syndicators generally don't care about individual affiliates. Clearing a market is what's important. Of course, the best affiliate and the best offer will win, but since nobody else in the IE is considering Imus, it's up to KCAA to take him or leave him. LARadio.com had a story on how KCAA was passing on picking him up... it was their call. But to say ABC wouldn't want a top-25 market just because the station isn't the best is silly. Imus was on plenty of dog stations in Tampa (two of them), KC, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, San Francisco, etc.

Correction from my last post: KCAA could get Imus back, KABC or not...

At least you get him on air, even at the weird hour. I dont get him at all on the radio. We only get Imuson directv here in Cincinnati, Ohio.

If they paid for it, though, as you mentioned, KCJB.

Good post. I hadn't realized that the IE was 59 miles outside the LA metro.

Still better that KABC have it, though, for the market identity. Same for being on dogs to say "We're on in Philly, Tampa, etc." unlike Air-America, which says it has stations in Philly that are 90 miles away...in Stroudsburg.

No doubt, oaktree, they should take whatever they can get. Outside of the top 2 or maybe 3 talk shows, most of them take the best of a bad bunch in at least some markets. Imus in most. I'm simply saying KCAA wouldn't interfere with KABC especially if it aired from 6-9am like it used to there (running it on 35 watts wouldn't be a good use of the affiliation fee, anyway).

Good point. Could I offer up the KCAA be the only station to air Imus? Darn, I am wishing again.
