KABQ

What's going on over there? 12+ and in-demo numbers nothing but down, even around the election. A year or so ago, they were far and away the #2 talker, even coming close KKOB in 25-54 during a few dayparts. Now they're not that much better off than Citadel flank KTBL, and practically tied 12+. Not that there's any better option for the format, but with numbers like these and no other spoken word formatted stations to combo sell with, libtalk can't be seen as the success story it once was over at the CC compound.

Speaking of which, aren't the Broncos and Rockies up for grabs after this season? I thought CC didn't want them on 1350 anymore, seeing that they're not a sports station. Don't know where else they'd go, since 610 has every sporting event imaginable already locked up, and 1310's sports format is in question. Maybe whatever that trainwreck on 106.3 is could become the FM sports talker... they might even get ESPN (or Rome). Second time's a charm!

(BTW, didn't the last of many incarnations of now-KTBL fail with the same classic country format now employed on "The Range"? Answer: yes. Aah, the geniuses at the Carlisle Braintrust.)

I'd say the programming on KABQ is just plain bad. Boring, boring, shrill, repetitive. In the early days the people hungry for liberal-oriented talk programming would listen despite the bad programming. But that can only last so long until even the die-hard liberals give up and return to their previous habits, which according to the latest numbers, they have...

Besides the fact that the station has been operating at night power during the day much of the time, and now runs its IBOC (HD AM) 24/7 - listen to the hiss on either side of 1350 - its a loser. It looks like CC has just given up on the station.

BTW, the 1310 signal is likely to go religious - another one bites the dust!

What does that make - 4 religion AMs, plus the 2 CCMs, one or two religion FMs, and whatever translators there are? Geez. Someone should be able to do all-sports in the market... KNML has a better 12+ share than practically any sports station in the southwest and of course has better numbers where it counts. A second tier station should be able to pull a little of that if done right. Too bad Simmons just didn't care about Abq to make an effort.

I would actually say, though, that the programming on 1350 is getting BETTER. They added Stephanie Miller in the morning to replace a taped AAR morning feed and an hour of Springer. If they're running a night signal during the day, that's bad. That night pattern isn't exactly monstrous.

Both KABQ and KTBL don't do much beyond dishing out satellite feeds. KABQ has a lousy signal toward NW Abq and Rio Rancho at night, and you can hardly listen to KTBL after dark given the strong interference from 150,000 watt 'La Ranchera' blasting out of Monterey unless you're really into Bill O'Reilley being accompanied by a woeful lamentation of rejected love in Spanish. As for the future of KKNS, does anybody know if the Victor Camino listed in the paperwork filed with the FCC is the same individual associated with Univision Radio in L.A.?

Well, the difference is KTBL isn't meant to get ratings or really make much money.

AM radio is Abq is going from bad to worse. The Vanguard cluster is in a slump and can't be making any money.

Camino has not been with UVN LA for about a year.
