You know what? Merced used to have a great AC station on 106.3 playing Westwood One's Bright A/C with Bob & Sheri in the Mornings... then along came Mapleton and changed the format on that poor station about 8 or 9 times over the past 10 years. Along the way, they also destroyed the signal. 106.3 used to be non-D and had coveage basically from Madera to north of Modesto. Not any longer. After the attempted/failed purchase of 106.3 in Kingsburg, Merced's 106.3 is now directional and hardly covers it's own market. It doesn't make it to Chowchilla, and barely makes Turlock. The signal sucks. It was playing AC, but now Spanish Oldies... and sounds terrible...
KABX used to play ABC's Oldies Format, then it's own music with a consultant.... and a program director who knew absolutely zero about Selector and had exactly 250 songs in rotation out of a 2500 song library.... it wasn't all that good.
So then Mapleton put it on Dial Gloabal's Good Time Oldies satellite, which was ok, but then Dial Global dropped the format and KABX switched to their most recent format, which was mostly 70's and 80's music. However, DG brought back their Good Time Oldies format, but KABX decided to stay where they were, calling themselves "Greatest Hits".... playing mostly 70's and 80's music while on the satellite, and a bunch of 50's and 60's when Wolfman Jack, Dave Luna, or other programs were on... then Angie Munroe during the Noon Hour played a bunch of what I'd call Hot AC..
I think KABX sounded like a ship without a rudder, they had lost their identity, they diidn't really know who they were.
Everytime that an AC station left Merced, folks were upset. Hopefully KABX will fill that void. Personally, I like the way it sounds... and I'm 64 yrs old.
