KACC Changes

Looks like the "Gulf Coast Rocker" is gone. The deep classic rock format of KACC has given way to a wildly eclectic format that plays just about everything from oldies, classic hits, CHR, alternative and country. There is currently no imaging outside of the top of hour legal ID, and the website is no longer online either.

I liked KACC's rock format when I listened to it, they played a lot of lesser-known songs.

As for what listeners are saying, everything on this website is negative regarding the new format... KACC Radio 89.7 FM

Here is a media player stream for KACC which also works in web browsers.

Flowing from Rainbow's "Street of Dreams" into Aloe Blacc's "The Man." Certainly has the sound of a placeholder non-format to me.

That was the way it was when I worked there (1981 - 1989-when it was 91.3). One announcer (usually 3 hours) would do country, the next rock. That was usually for those that were in there 2nd year of 2year degree. Sometimes you could go from format to format just by playing another song. I was there because as you know radio, it gave me a place to "Work" while waiting the next gig. Plus it's where I learned how to be a Board Op for the Alvin Yellowjackets.

I'm wondering if there has been a change at the top of the media sector at Alvin Community College or about to be. Covid might be part of the reason as well although it would seem the change would have been prior to last summer if Covid was at play here. My guess is the station is stunting at this point. I hired a few ACC grads with good results. As far as radio goes, the graduates know their stuff when they complete their classes.

KACC has been run for years as a true lab environment for radio: the students learned how to use Selector, how to produce, how to jock, how to sell (underwriting) - because the station was set up to mimic a commercial format. I've come across a bunch of KACC grads over the years, and they've all known their stuff.

I hope they don't mess with that.

The website has been gone for a few months, at least since November. Looks like the domain registration was allowed to lapse.

Here's another eclectic rock station, which sounds pretty decent. It's non-commercial, not owned by a school. 90.9 The Bridge

As for KACC, maybe going to Centro Cristiano?

I don't think so, they need to save money and buy a commercial FM and bring back La Mejor or move La Calle to a stronger FM.

Wouldn't be surprising as many educational institutions have been selling off their radio stations. We saw that here twice with 91.7.

Now we wait to see which religious broadcaster winds up with 89.7, if a sale does happen.
I mean there’s a high possibility of a religious broadcaster buying it, maybe another Air 1 repeater or K LOVE?

KSBJ could buy it as an a NGEN outlet. I don't think they have coverage on the south side for that
I was about to say that KYBJ has the south side covered. However taking another look at the KXNG and KYBJ contours there is an area of mediocre coverage for both 91.7 and 91.1 that would be well served by the 89.7 signal, so yes, a good consideration for Hope Media Group.

KXNG coverage: KXNG-FM Radio Station Coverage Map
KYBJ coverage: KYBJ-FM Radio Station Coverage Map
KACC coverage: KACC-FM Radio Station Coverage Map

Another possibility might be KHCB, which could use 89.7 to replace 1400 AM and the 101.5 translator, both of which could be sold off.

What about non-religious operators? Any of them might be interested?
