KAFE question

Good question! All I know is it could be any day now because the CRTC will soon allow CHHR to begin testing and in order to do that, KAFE must be out of the way.

The CRTC also moves at light speed compared to the FCC. However, when it's an international affair, things usually get expedited from slug to turtle speed at the FCC....

Shore 104 CHHR-FM Vancouver is scheduled to begin testing on its originally assigned frequency of 104.1 at 1:04 p.m. Monday, June 1, provided no problems materialize. The station had hoped to sign on at its newly assigned frequency of 104.3, but the move of KAFE-FM Bellingham from 104.3 to 104.1 has not yet been authorized by the FCC. Shore 104 management is hopeful that the frequency swap will occur by this fall.

Considering the speed of the FCC, I would say "this fall" is any given autumn later in this century.........

I heard somewhere the original KERI (the earliest predecessor to KAFE) was originally on (or licensed to) 104.1 before being bumped up to 104.3.....would be an interesting turn of events.......

Speaking of KAFE, they're mad as hell at Performance Tax and they're not gonna take it anymore, Prepares to unleash non-stop 50 minute Sheryl Crow/Elton John/Jason Mraz/Colbie Calliat marathon on Congress (Oh the humanity......):

I believe that KERI was on 104.3 when I worked there in 1966.

Interesting because those were calls of 93.3 before KUBE took over (20 years after the 60's)

Whoa...I thought the first thing on 93.3 was a station called KOTO which went defunct in a few years in the late '50s/early '60s, then KBLE-FM took over the frequency (and possibly something called KLFM) then KBLE-FM again until 1981 and finally KUBE.

When was this?

Whew! Just keeping up with the archeology of Puget Sound radio and keeping the facts halfway straight is a Excedrin headache! I know sometime I gotta write all this currently useless information in my brain down for posterity and free up some brain cells. I know some frequencies are worthy of entire books about them (1590 anyone? 96.5?...)

Thanks Bill...one more discrepancy out of the 104.3 file.....

And I should have remembered the KBLE call letters, since the Am station KARI was launched by the KBLE Seattle folks.

As I remember KBLE-AM 1050 was licensed to Kirkland and had the call letters KNBX, and since they also owned 550AM and 104.3FM up in Blaine, it's certantly likely those KBLE call letters were there first, then the call letters were moved to 1050AM along with the city of license change from Kirkland to Seattle. Then up in Blaine the FM there became KERI-FM to match the AM way back when.....that's the way I remember it....could be wrong....

SHORE 104 (CHHR 104.1) did indeed sign on at 1:04PM this afternoon with a Triple A format. Out here in Maple Ridge (in Vancouver's eastern suburbs) they have a real strong signal and do not appear to be adversely affected by KAFE Bellingham on the adjacent frequency of 104.3, nor does KAFE seem to be affected by CHHR. Both stations have excellent clean stereo signals, not unlike CKYE 93.1 (Red FM) being adjacent to KISM 92.9 and CKAV 106.3 (AVR) being adjacent to KWPZ 106.5. It does seem pretty apparent that stations can indeed be squeezed onto frequencies on the FM band that were previously deemed as unusable and all parties concerned can happily co-exist.

In the "it's gotta be a joke department" I will reserve my comments as to whether Vancouver can support two Triple A stations for a future posting.
