Flagstaff KAFF-AM is now 'The Legend'

I don't know when this flip occurred, so if this is old news, I apologize.

930 KAFF and it's FM translator at 93.5 in Flagstaff has dropped the Conservative Talk format that was in place since August of 2024. It's now branded as "The Legend", with 90's/2K and Legendary Country.

While it's "old" news as the switch occurred a couple of months back, you are the first to report on it here. Also, while I think the branding may be new, the format isn't for KAFF-AM--it was running a classic country format before its flip to conservative talk last year. Unfortunately for KAFF-AM, KBTK-FM (97.1 mHz, formerly 105.1 mHz) had beat them to the format by several years and KAFF-AM's chances for grabbing the conservative audience from KBTK-FM were very limited, despite KAFF-AM having by far the better daytime coverage of the two. We'll see but I think that, despite having a couple of local translators, Flagstaff Radio is likely going to turn in the AM station's license sooner than later.

I believe before the flip to News/Talk, they were also branded as 'The Legend'. Back then, the Classic Country was 80's/90's based. More updated now. I'm glad to see them return to their legendary roots playing Country.

As long as an AM primary is required, both KVNA-AM and KAFF-AM are safe for now. The two in Northern Arizona that I expect to be next for license cancellation or silent STA, would be KVWM and KDJI. Both are standalone AM's with no FM presence. KVWM and KDJI (which simulcast) does second tier talk programming, competing against a full power FM in the White Mountains. And there's also the lack of nighttime coverage for both.

I’ve done commercials for a few of the great circle media stations before I’ll probably end up doing more again… have even been on the air in Press-kit before

KDJI 1270 has been off the air for years (since at least 2021). They lost their transmitter shack due to flooding and have never rebuilt. Even when there was STA's active, I never could get a signal when going through town. Their other Holbrook station KZUA 92.1 has been on with dead air at a very low power for years too (completely different site on other end of town with no flooding). At least KVWM 970 is on the air and has support from the groups FM stations in Show Low.

It appears that I was half right so far. Lol

KDJI's day of reckoning is coming May 15. It will be one year from when they last filed an STA being off the air. The owner is the former GM of the previous owner Petracom. So, its not like he doesn't know the FCC rules and regulations. There was another thread about KVWM being 2 kHZ off frequency, I don't know if that's been resolved.
